BY JULIAN A. SELBY. Plymouth's Playful Pastor ?The preaa (outside of New York) is quite generally corning to the conclusion that Plymouth Church, headed by its playful paBtor, is not a healthy religi? ons institution. The Boston Post, a paper that has token a decidedly con? servative course in the Beeoher busi? ness, oonolodes a long artiol^ by say? ing: Tbs> prayer meetings, too, nro far from being an insignificant feature in this ecclesiastical comedy. Applause prevents tho interest from flagging, declamation and supplication become oddly confused, a verdict is smuggled into a prayer, and acoueeru are de? nounced'as conspirators of the viper family which the brethren at last have got beneath their feet. The "prophet of the nineteenth century," who for the vacation term only has consented to take the part of a "playful behe? moth/' laughs to scorn all imputations aimed at himself, though ob the New York Evening Post says, "many of Beeoher'* best friends doubt," until Moulton's statement is decisively solved, "whether he is not occupying a falBe position in the pnlpit and in society." Public judgment, however, shows symptoms of steadily settling down, where the foundations are se? cure. The whirlwind is going by now, but the still, small voice is behind nil this roar. Society nnd public morals do not yet exactly know how much they are indebted to this still, small voice. A good many people, still un infeoted with the idolatry of men and money, that is bo conspicuous in the textnre of Plymouth Church fellow? ship, are silently putting to tbemsoives the question, what if all ministers were to piok their associates after this free fashion, unbosom themselves to "blaok-mailers" io closer confidence, bang thus gratefully on the necks of outside "heathen," live in the power of such great "darkness," resort to "devices to save themselves," call in others to "tie op threatening storms," and plot and counterplot with unbe? lievers to deaden the influence of "deacons' meetings" nnd destroy the "near and u*x,t danger, the womuu"? how long could the church maintain its place and exert its rightful force in society, pleading for their playful paB tors in the regular prayer meetings that tbey ait "throned above their car? nal natures," and that their "great, jocund strength" must be allowed, like the behemoth, plenty of room for play and recreation? Suob honest souIp, Heaven bless them still! are much too serious for this world tbey are in. Tbey bavo not enough of "great jocund strength" in them. Tbey are too matter-of-fact to compre? hend the "game" of employing Moni tont) to help drop Tiitons from the church rollB, and the froliosomeneBS of introducing a "dear You Moltke" as side counsellor in fendiog off the as? saulting criticisms of au eoolesjnstioai council. Tbey are too unsophisticated to understand bow such clerical sports, extending over a term of four years, should have the effect to deepen and strengthen a pastor's growth in spirit? ual life, no that a plain, business-like, consistent and terrido statement like that of the friend who was confided in until the very lust moment, without a reproach of "black-mail" to be beard or seen anywhere, glances off like rain from a tight roof, und only suggests another character for a hotel parlor charade. This is, indeed, the mystery of mysteries. If Tllton aud Moultou are innorntuble and burd to find ont, Plymouth Church and its pastor defy the moat peuetrutiog wit that ever worked, or any problem, human or divine. Arlher Puroell, the man who offered a reward of $20,000 for the recovery of the little Charley Boss, bus an? nounced the withdrawal of hie offer. He eaya he now believes that no orime has been committed, and that the whole affair will bo officially com? pounded. Best Coal, Cheap for Cash.
