TE BY JULIAN A. SELBY. Is This War or Murder??The files of the Eoglish newspapers, in the | latest mails, confirm tho news of the Gnrlist atrocitiea. "It is reported from Olot," says one journal, "thut 180 men of the Noavilas oolumn, who Lad been prisoners there for some time, have been ahot in oold blood. The taking of Ouenaa was obaractei ized by horrible brutalities, which the wife of Don Alfonso is aoouBed of having instigated. The Civil Ouards had every tenth man shot, and tie town was given op to plnuder. But the ruffians were met by a Republican column as they retreated, and had to disgorge all their spoil, besides losing many of their officers." These stories are confirmed by trustworthy news? papers, and one journal insists thatl "something will have to he done lo] prevent outrage on international law." Can any one toll ns the difference between Carlism and Communism? In what respect is Don Carlos, the descendant of princes, who deoimates prisoners, less infamoos than the Commune laboring men who shot an Arohbishop? And is this Cnrlist busi? ness not a murder??New York Herald. The list of accidents to aorohats has been increased by the fall, on Tuesday evening, at Jersey City, of Charles Hanlon, who dropped from a trapeze twenty-five feet, striking on tho corner of a table and sustaining injuries that will probably prove fatal. This man belongs to the famoni Hanlon famiiy, who have often delighted nndieuces all j over the States with their daring per? formances. They havo all died violent ] deaths, the lust being that of James Hanlon, u brother of Charles, who created a sensation throughout the conutry several years ago. After a brilliant career, James bee.imo iusane, and was temporarily placed in a Penn? sylvania jail, preparatory to removed | to an insane asylum. Before tfcs was accomplished, he succeeded in dusbing I ont his brains against the stouo walls uf his cell, and endod his life of danger j in tbis trugic manner. Mr. J. A. Parker, snperintendent of a cnnnl company in the Pueblo Viejo Valley, Arizona, bus found tho ruius of several ancient cities, with the remains of u canal, and triaugnlur &haped stone reservoirs in each of the cities or towns. Pottery, household implements made of ?tou!\ and human boues have been found in tho ruits. The pottery is decorated in colors. I he walls of the dwellings are laid in cement, and tho interior of a largo building, supposed to have been a place of worship, bnd been smoothly plastered; no that thoy uro vestiges of I u higher stale of civilization than has been found among the Indians or Mexican aborigines of historio times. Ax Aged Methodist Divine ?Pro? bably the oldest Methodist divino in the Uuited States, if not in the world, is the venerable Father Henry Boehm, who resides at the residence of his sun- | in-lnw, Mr. Einley, on Lafayette atre-.d, ?Jersey City. Ho recently entered on I his 100th birth -day. Hu bus lived j under all the Presidents, from Wash? ington down; has been in the ministry over seventy-three years, and probably preached as many, or more, sermons than uuy man since the duys of John Wesley. Father Boehm is in tolerubly good health und spirits, und says be confidently hopr.t; to bo able to uttcud the Philadelphia ceuteuniul, iu 1S70. "Let o C< Our I'ticrikiopylra, Id view of tbe combinations which have boon formed to strengthen tied sustain tho Radical nowspupcr organ at this place, a ward as to ourselves may not bo amiss to our readers und tho public. Without referring, in n ?otice of this kind, to the supposed and probable sources of supply which have been luid undor contribution to revive that failing journal, we may justly take the statements us they ap? pear in it, aud draw from them a use? ful and valuable lesson, It says that it "bus been recently purchased by seve? ral influential Republicans, who have contributed their means to ita support. The paper waa on tho eve of suspen? sion, when they stepped forward to save it, and to nail the Republican colors to its mant-head." Here is a combination of men, who uuitc their means, talents, experience, influence and labors to uphold their party jour? nal. That journal is specially devoted to a maintenance, of its party organi? zation. It has rallied every available element aud brought it iuto lino for this purpose. It has no thought of the great interests or violated rights of tho people. It moves wholly upon tho plane of party prejudico. party passion and party ascendancy. It seeks to per petnuto its domination us of the most vital necessity and ut all huzards. With the wrecks of tho ruin and dis? grace it bus wrought ljiug round ou all hand.-; with th?; condemnation of the American people ringing in its ears overy duy; with the terrible de? nunciations of decent RupublicuU journals all over this country; with the lruntic desperation of muducas it seeks to prolong its wretched existence. It craves that it may coutiuuu to govoru tha fortunes of tho State of South Carolina, not appreciating tho fact that it has, by its ignorance, corrup? tion aud indecency, by its* crimes ugaiust tho people, aguinst their liber? ties, against civilization itself, for? feited ttio right to exist, and much more, the honor to govern. It gives uotice that it will make ti desperate struggle for a now louse of power, and ;t puts forth efforts corresponding to the importance ol the sinke und tin magnitude of the issue. Havjng ap? propriated a fund, and ru.ide their journal strong in means; having en? listed tho service? and interest of seve? ral writers; having mado a pool, so to speak, of tho political fortunes of u number of aspiring men and candi? dates, they are ready to exert ?b power for ovil; they mean to disseminate its corrupting doctrines, and, if possible, make its sophistries popular und pre? valent. Wo shall not speuk of ourselves, further than to say that we occupy in ' this contest no doubtful attitude. We have certain clearly-defined views and objects which we seek to impress upon the public mind. We sou just before us gigantic issues, aud it is our effort to enlighten and prepare the country for them. As we have frequently said, there is much to be done. If we were to-day enlightened upon the mutters which so nearly concern us; if our peo? ple fully aod rightly appreciated the situation in which they arc; if they only suw aud felt tho momentous eveuts which arc hastening ou; if they were both informed of uud sternly united upon the duties of the hour, the Radical power would melt away before their stern determination. Will our friends think of the great cause which they, us well as we, ought to have at heart? Will they utrengthen our bauds by their sympathy, encouragement uud support? Our mentis are moderate, our resources' small. Wo are a unit against a multitude. Wo are alone iu the midst of ttrougcombinations. We depeud eutirely upon legitimate bu? siness. We have nothing to rely upou but subscriptions and ndvi rtise merits. These we want, and it is not too much for us to nay, these we urn entitled ;n liavo, We ought to-din. to number a*, leimt 5,000 subscribers iu this Stale. That would bring us ad? vertising. Tbu? would uiuku uc pecu? niarily independent. That would enable, us to employ uud pay for talent iu employees and writers in number and force snfllcietit to make a strong impression on the side wo espouse and defend. We should liko to scud forth a stroug and able journal, the power? ful advocate of truth, the icflexible exponeut of duty, the clarion voice summoning the peoplo to ojuccrt of action against thn wrongs they loo pa? tiently endure. We should enjoy luy iug ou our editorial scourge every day, whipping tho rascals nuked through the land. But if we are to be a power, to stand at a sentinel ou the watch-tower, to send rays of intelli? gence and light into every coruor of the country, to pour out a daily stream which shall fertilize aud gladden the laud, to be a terror to evil-doers and a beacon-light of guidanco. and hope to nn oppressed people, our friends must sustain us, the pnblio must stand by our side. We have long stood iu tho broach, buttling with such strength as our almost unaided arm could wield, We usk that wo shall not be left in the OLUMBIA, S. C, FRIDAY laroh. And now, looking away from ouraelvee, wo say to tbe couulry, this position is one of immense importance. It will not do to give it up, or to lone it, or to leavo it to a weak und insuffi? cient force to maintain. iiiun it tho? roughly, and place it iu the keeping of faithful men.
