A London inventor named DeGrod has invented* a successful Hying ma? chine, in which he recently went up from the Gremorne Gardens and oame down again all right, after a flight of half a mils. The machine is con? structed of cane and water-proof silk. In appearance, it may be represented by a bat's wing* joined to a peacock's tail. The winga are thirty-seven feet long, with an average breadth of fonr feet. The tail is eighteen feet by three. Both wings and tail are insert? ed into two hinged wooden frames, the upper surface of whioh is covered with prepared silk laced to euch cane, twisted and forming a rope as they ap? proach the wooden frame. In the | centre of these hinged frames 1b an up? right wooden stand about twelve feet high, to whioh the winga and tail are attaohed. On this stand, the operator takes his place, and by means of three levers works both wings and tail, hin pov. er of pre p rision being inoreased by a oorded seac attaohed to the levers. This combination enables him to re? lieve the pressure on bis hands. The Gebman Empire.?The German Empire has now a population of 41, (160,846, of whioh 20,150,900 are males and 20,909,000 females, probably the nearest to an equilibrium of Hexes in any country of an equally large popu? lation. Sixty-three per cent, of the inhabitants are over the age of fifteen years, and these are also pretty equally divided in regard to sex. Forty per cent, of those over the age of fifteen are unmarried, about nine per cent, widowed and one-fifth per cent, di? vorced. Of the whole popnlation, 2,500,000 are Poles, 150,000 Wepds, 50,000 Ozeobains, 150,000 Litthauers, 150,000 Danes and 270,000 French. The Protestants olaim 25,549,781 of the inhabitants, the Oatholios 14,851, 450, the Jews 512,069. Thirty-one per cent, live in cities; sixty-nine in the country. Of the cities, thirty-one olaim a popnlation of over 50,000 eaoh. The number of dwelling houses in the empire amounts to 5.263,000, and these are inhabited by 7,565,0001 families. Several revolts have broken out in the Northern and Eastern parts of I Prnssia against the new reform in the | government of the Conutie?. Al? though the measure, whioh, when passed two years sinoe, caused sach excitement, was regarded us a blow at the great land-holders, it seems that the peasantry do not so regard it, bot I suspect a triok, and deoluro that the' reform only throws more power into the hands of the aristocracy. The more ignorant even believe thut they will be deprived of eqnal rights before the law and reduced to a state of Vassalage. ????? If \vi woru to-day enlightened upon tho matters which so nearly ooncoru us; if our poo pie fully aid rightly appreciated the situatiou in whioh thoy are; if tbey only saw and felt the momentous events which aro hastening ou; if they wore both informed of and sternly united upon the duties of the hour, the Radical power would melt away boforo their stern determination. Wo havo nothiug to rely upon but subscriptions and advurtise monts. These wo want, and it is not too much for us to say, tlieso wo are entitled to have.
