A. 8cott, Newborry.; . . ?1 ' * H. W. Lawaon, Abbeville. * Cuba?A?SiGj? of PnoaiiEss.?Tho reactionists in Cuba seem to bo gra? dually bending before the inevitable march of events. For tbo first time the Spanish flag divested of the em? blem of tdyilty -jpos, yesterday, hoist? ed over the palace of tho Captain Generftlj ' It may appear a very email matter whether or not a certain piece of bunting carries a crown, but.with the Spanish people small points of eti- ? qnette have more significance than with us. As long na 'there eeomed a chance that tho republic could bo overthrown'and some form of mo? narchy erected in its stead, so long, tho Spaniards in Cuba stubbornly held* on to the flag with tho oroW, even when it had ceased to be tho flag of tbo na? tion. If they have1 now consented to tho hoisting of the purely Republican banner, it is beoanso they recognize that the. restoration, o.? any form, of monarchy has become'almost impossi? ble in Spain. We are pleased to notice this power of appreciating events, be? cause it gives promise that sooner or later, they will see how foolish it is to continue to hold Cuba against tho wisheB of the Cuban people. Six years of war must have modified their belief in their ability to suppress tho insur? rection, and ought to have convinced them that the only possible issue to the present struggle involves the entire separation of tbo island from Spain. The struggle may be continued until Cuba beoomos a second St. Domingo, but it is difficult to see what benafit can ncorue to Spain from a war a Void ranee. On the contrary, tho recogni? tion of the independence of Cuba would seoure the property of the Spa? niards at present on the island and would give Spain a $100,000,000 to fill her depleted treasury. Can wo hopo that the "good | Spaniards" will recog? nize these faots before it js too late? [New York Herald. A Jewish Shekel.?\\a were shown yesterday, by Mr. A. Wronski, of this city, a curiosity in the shapo of a silver coin. It is what is known as a Jewish shekel, issued about 2,000 years ago, in the time of -King Solomon, and is near the size of what was known here in the good old ante-bellum; times as a silver half dollar, though not so thick. On one side is a pot of incense, with the inscription in Hebrew, "Shekel of Israel," and on the reverse the fac simile of "Aaron's .Rod," which "budded, bloaspmed nn^ born fruit in! a dov," and tho! words also in Hebrew,; "Tbo Holy Jerusalem.''
