BY JULIAN A. SELBY. The Crops.?The National Crop Re? porter pobliBhea estimates deduced from the reports o! correspondents in relation to the comparative area of spring wheat and oats this season in the several Western States. The late? ness of the season having prevented the ol- sing of the usual spring sowings by May 1, Minnesota is not included in the estimates. For the .States of Illinois, Ioiva, Kansas, Missouri and Wisconsin, tbo average area sown this spring to wheat is placed at seven or eight-tenths per oent. greater than In the spring of 1873. The increase is four and six tenths per cent, in Illinois, twelve and one-tenth per cent, in Iowa, six aud one-tenth per oent. in Kansas, Beven and four-tenths per cent, in Missouri, three and five-tenths in Wisconsin. The acreage seeded in oats thin spring, in comparison with the area Bown last spring,.is an increase in the States named, as follows: Indiana, 2 6-10 per oent; Iowa, 0 8-10; Kansas, 8 8-10; Ohio, 8 5-10; Wisconsin, 8 6-10. In Illinois, there is an esti? mated falling off in the area of 1110 and in Missouri 1 210 per oent. The average for the seven States is an in? crease of 5 2-10 per oent. at the figures given. The inoreased area is about 255,000 acres of oats and 427,000 acres of wheat for the States named. The returns in relation to the com- j parative condition of swine in the j West, on May 1, indicates a much higher condition than at the beginning of the previons month. The average condition, May 1, in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mis? souri, Wisconsin and Ohio was 87 3-10, a fall average condition being 100. No especial change in the prospects of the frqit crops is noted, the outlook being .moat favorable. Another horrible scene in the Bri? tish royal family. The DuohesB of Edinburgh had borrowed the Princess oi Wales: crimping irons. In return? ing them she presented the hot ends to her Royal HighneBs, who thought? lessly took hold of them, and then waltzed around with one hand be? tween her knees for several minutea before she could speak. Eye-witness? es of the occurrence express their be? lief that the dajs of the RuBsiau Um? pire sre numbered. Ool. French Strange, of Opelika, Ala., attempted to pull the nose of Ool..Galhoun, editor of the Columbus Enquirer, on Satureay night, because the latter declined to apologize for an offensive article published nearly nine months ago. Ool. Otlhoun struck with his fists, and Strange attempting to draw,a pistol, was disarmed by the of? fice employees. When will rush men cease to tempt death by attacking editors? A parliamentary return of owners of land in Scotland gives us some curiouB figures. The Ducal family of Suther? land, own 1,800,000acres in two Conn ties, and the Earl of Breadulbane over 400,000 aores. Next come the Dokej of Buacleucb, tho Earl of Fife, the Earl of Seafield and the Dukes of Athol, of Argyle and of Hamilton,, each owning from 150,000 to 250,000 acres. The highest yearly rental is $1,000,000. Hannibal Humlin has been in pub? lic office without cessation for thirty oight years, and they begin to think in Maine that be has had his share and ought to give some one else a chance j It was Gen. Crittendeu, of Ken? tucky, who described tho mulo as "one of those useful unimuls that has no pride of fjanccetry and no hope of pos? terity." Nilus G. Paukeh. L'do an Catpi.ess.
