Malmaison, one of the State domains of France, is about to be sold, to assist in *tbe replenishment of the impover? ished exoheqaer. Its origin dates from 1244, when it was a simple farm, do pendent upon the parish of Rueil. It was then culled Mala MauBio, in re membranoe of the deeds committed there by the invading Normans in the ninth century. Toward tbo revolution of 1789, Malmaison had becomo ono of the most agreeable chateaux in the su? burbs of Paris. In 1798, it was bought by Josephine Taucher de la Pagerie, widow of M. de Beauhernais, and the first wife of Bonaparte, who continued to inhabit It after her divorce. In 1826, it was bought by a Swedish bank? er, who sold it for SGOO.UOO to Queen Christina. In 18(31, tbo Emperor Na? poleon became the possessor of it for 1,100,000 francs. Malmaison is rioh in historical recollections. In 1814, it was sacked by the allied armies. ? - ? ?? ? A Richmond (Va.) correspondent says that tho solid men of Virginia have taken alarm nt tho administration of af? fairs in South Carolina, "und having ar? rived at the conclusion that the existing generation of blacks will continue to cling to a party in opposition to their former masters, lmvo determined to let them shift for themselves and look for support from thoso uuder whose dicta lion they vote. In short, this tnusl uud shall bo a white man's Statu, und to ac? complish this object every inducement will bo hold oat tor immigration to Vit ginia, white labor will bo given the pre? ference, and the negro may shift for himself nntil he is willing to recoguize tho Enperiority of the Caucasian race, and bo guided by reason rather than fanaticism." Dr. Curry, the noted Northern Me? thodist preacher and editor, and one of the loyalist men that ever anathema? tized a rebel, has been down South re? cently, and has gouo back homo with some of his r:t theories in a state of utter demolition. For instance, he con? cludes that the project of mixing whites and blacks in churches nt the South is an utter failure. If the negroes pre? dominate the whites stay at home, and if the latter predominate the darkeys stay at home, ThbAbtof Swimhino.?If you wish to drown yoarself, kiok and splash ubout as violently as you can, and you will soon go to the bottom. But if you remember that you aro lighter than water, and if you calmly and steadily refrain from drawing your breath while under the water, koep your head raised, and your arms under, you will soon learn to float and swim. Hangers on about bar-rooms, waiting for invitations to drink, aro called "poros plasters" now. Private Boarding, BY Mflri. M. A. DAYJS.
