mittee, on. Ways and Means, spoke on
ti^e subject of street lamps, which the

mer meeting, and also called the atten?
tion of the Council to one on exhibi
. iion in the hall, and thought the burner
was one preferable to any light he had
seep; it beings burner that generated
its Own gas from naphtha, and gave a
light equal, if hot superior, to the best
coal gas;' and as the matter of tbe
kind df burners tb bo aeed in the lamps
? ordered by the city had not been deter?
mined on, asked of Council to take ac?
tion. He also stated that the cost would
be about 83,200, with barners and all
attachments, including lanterns and
posts'. He also asked of Council to heir
from John D. Whilden, agent of tbe
Globe Gas Ught Company, of Boston,
who wag in the hall, and had the before
rntihtiorW light on exhibition.
Captain Whilden then made a state?
ment as to tbe cost of naphtha in the
burners offered by his dompany. Also,
offered to attach his reservoirs and
burners to the lanterns contracted for,
and run 200 or more lights? for fivo
years, furnishing all material, oil, etc.,
for $30 per lamp.
On motion of Alderman Carpenter,
the whole matter was referred to tho
Committeo on Wuys and Means.
Alderman Carpenter, from the Com?
mittee oh Ways and Means, who were
requested to furnish a statement of
bonds sold and paid for to the city,
made the following report: New bonds
issued, $250,000; total amount delivered
and paid for, $214,750; balance deposit?
ed in the banks of the eity, $35,250.

report of tho committee was adopted
and ordered to bo published.
Tbe following resolution was offered
by Aldorman Carpenter and adopted:

Tbe Committee on Accounts reported

Alderman Thompson, Chairman of
the Committee on Alma House, reported
that Lue' contractor for tho now alms
house was ready to give the bonds and
commence work, and asked of Council
to fix the amount of the bond, tbo time
for the work to be finished, and how the
money-should be paid.
Alderman Carroll stutcd that the
fence around the city school-bouse
needed repairs, and asked Council to
take a'otion.
On motion of Aldorman Griffiu, the
committee were instructed to have the
necessary repairs made.
The Committee on Gnard House re?
ported back tbe report of the Chief of
Police for November as examined and
* foond correct. Adopted.
Alderman Carroll offered an ordinanco
to amend au ordinance for regulating
licenses for tbe year 1674, and to lower
the same in some cases.
Alderman Cooper objected to tho
ordinance, as ho thought it benefited
only tbe rich man, and did not in any
way benefit tho poor man.

Alderman Carpenter made a motion
to strike out the enacting clause.
Alderman Carroll culled for the yens
and nays, which resulted as follows:
Those voting in the affirmative were?
Aldermen Thompson, Lowndes, Taylor,
Mitchell, Young, Griffin and Cooper.
Those voting in the negative were?
Aldermen Carroll and Oarr.
Bids wero then offered for famishing I
the city with 250 lamp posts. The con
traot was, on motion of Alderman Tay?
lor, awarded to Shiver & Mims, nt one
dollar per post; to be painted, two
coatfl, and finished as per Bpeoifioatiou
in advertisement, they being the lowest |
bidders.
Alderman Thompson, from the Com?
mittee on Alms House, recommended
that the oontraetor for tho now alms
honse give a bond for $4,000, and tho
same be completed iu five mouths, and
asked of Council if they proposed to
have an arohiteot.
Alderman Young moved to amend the
recommendation of the committee, by
giving six months to complete instead
of five mouths.
Alderman Cooper moved to adopt the
recommendation of the committee, with
the amendment offered by Alderrmiu
Young. Carried.
On motion, by Alderman Taylor, tho
Chief of Police was? instructed to en?
force the ordinance concerning wagons
and other vehicles atnndiug on the
streets ut night in front of shopa or
stores.
On motion, by Alderman Taylor,
Council adjourned.
