It is very valua? ble now, bat it was purchased many years ago. We made application at the gate tor admission and were refused. Wo appealed to a young Parsee who happened to'be passing. He was dressed in silk, and very gentlemanly in bis ap? pearance. He said no Europeans were admitted. Wa told bim that we wore not Europeans, bat Americans. He said he'^cald be very happy to oblige ' American b, bat obuld not, bat did con vse^t that we should go up the road, out? ride the ianer wall, and have a view of the oily and bay. The sentinel took as along the winding road, and a rapee given to him acted like a charm. It opened" all the gates and passed the police. ? There were no Parsees in sight to Stand in our -way, und we entered the prohibited enclosures. The grounds Sre surrounded by a wall twenty feet igh. and have been used for a great 1 number of years by this strange people. There are no monuments in the ceme? tery. There are three ronnd towers , about fifty feet in diameter, and fifty to uixty feet high. On the top of these towera there is an iron grate. The dead are brought to the grate and delivered to the priests, and the friends depart. The priests prepare the corpse and lay it on the grate, and the bones drop through the'grate into the oharnel house below. 'These towers or vaults are called the 'Towers of Silena.' We saw hundred* o! vultures sitting on these towers, and the sentinel told as that they would take all the flesh from the bones of a corpse iu an hour. We asked why thoBo towers? The sentinel, pointing to one, said, 'Parsee with plenty of money put there;' to another, 'Parsee with but lit? tle money pat there,' and the other, 'Pareeo with no money put there.' The sentinel said when a corpso is placed on the grate, the strife and noise of the vnltares is frightful, and coald be heard for a long distance. We Raw those 'Towers of Silena,' and do not euro ever to be any nearer." i 'The Tax-Payers' Convention.?The members of the Executive Committee of the Tax-puyers' Convention are re 8nested to meet at the rooms of the hamber of Commerce, in Charleston, on Tuesday, 18th day of January, in? stant, at 12 M., for the purpose of con? sulting upon the proposal of the Cham? ber of Commerce, that the convention be re-assembled "to take into considera? tion, the present condition of the tax? payers of the State,'? and also a propo? sition to enlarge the numbers of the eshf convention. The following gentle? men compose the Executive Committee: James Ohesnnt, Johnson Hagood, Thos. ? Y. Simons, C. W. Dudley, E. B. O. Cash, F. F. Warley, A. P. Aldrioh, Henry Gonrdin, H. O. Porter, President. ?_ A &at)y Who Daxoed with Wash? ington.?Mrs. Franoes M. Bnrling died in Milford, Pa., recently, aged ninety six. Her maiden name was Hurst. She was a belle in New York society nearly eighty years ago. On one oocasion, at a publio reception in that city, she was Gen. Washington's partner in a dance. She was on terms of iutimato acquaint? anceship with LaFayette, Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and ma.uy?of the great.men and women of that day. A CaeEBFOti Face.?There is no greater evory-day virtue than cheerful? ness. This quality iu mun among men !8 like sanshine to the day, or geutlu, renewing moi&tore to parched herbs. The light pf o oheerlul face diffuses it? self, and communicates the happy spirit that inspires it. The sourest temper must sweeten iu the atmosphere of continuous good humor. ? A certain near-iighted lady could never be induced to admit the fact, but persisted in declaring that her sight was excellent. One day a waggish neigh? bor staok a needle in the side of a barn, and placing her on the other side of the road, asked her if she coald see it. "Oh yes," she replied, looking in the direc? tion indicated, "bat where is the barn?" One of the charges for which an ar? tillery officer was recently cashiered, it ie stated, speoifled that on a recent oc? casion, be entered a store in Sitka, Alaska, and seating himself on the floor beside an Indian squaw, took her pipo and smoked it. Such conduct was con? sidered "nnboooming an officer und a gentleman." . Hope writes the poetry of the boy, bat memory that of the man. Man looks forward with smiles, bat backward with sighs. Such, is the wise providence of God. The cup of life is sweetest at the brim, the flavor is impaired as we drink deeper; and the dregs are made bitter that we may not straggle when it ie taken from our lips. A phrenologist told a man he had combativeness very largely developed, and was of a quarrelsome disposition. "That isn't so," said the man, angrily; "and if yoa repeat it I'll knock you down." Diogoneze hunted in the day time ? for an honest man, With a lantern; if he had lived in theze times, ho would have needed the bed-light of a lokomotiff. "This is the rook of agee," said the lather, rooking two hours, and the baby still awake. "A thing of beauty is a jaw forever," as a gentleman Raid of his handsome, scolding wife. < Singular Stobt of Ska faring Life. Patrick O'Neal and Frank Miller, two of the crew of the schooner Tnbal Cain, of Gloucester, Mass., who left the vessel to visit their trawls, October 14, and disappeared in a fog and were snpposod to have perished, have been heard from at London. The men were six days aud nights in a boat, wiihont anything to | eat or drink, except a Jittle rain cn one occasion, which soaked their clothing and gave some relief. On the seventh morning, they were pioked np nearly dead from exhaustion by a Norwegian brig, bound to London, and kindly cared for. No tidings have yet been reoeived of George Cook nud Jesse Oliver, belonging to the Bame vessel, who nobly risked their lives to go in searoh of theBe their companions, but! never returned. It is rather hard to have nice facts dis? turbed by subsequent explanations. Iu Beading, Pa., a few days ago, a man's) life was saved by the ball from a pistol, accidentally discharged, entering a Bible which he carried in his pocket. Everybody Baid, "See how the religious are rewarded!"?until it was discovered that this devotee had stolen the B&cred volume and was on his way to puwu it for liquor. Trials aro moral ballast, that often prevent our capsizing. When v/e have I mach to carry, heaven rarely fails to fit i tho back to the burden; where we have j nothing to hear, wo can seldom bear) ourselves. Tho burdened vessel may bo j slow in reaching the dislant port, but the vessel without ballast is in imminent danger of not reaching it at all. The lievicio says: **A Peoria letter carrier, after walking n?no tuilesand de? livering the same letter to 137 men,! nono of whom.would receive it, sat dowu 1 on a fire-plug and wept because Poca houtas was such a fool as to catch tho old man's war-club and save the pro? genitor of u detested aud innuim.-iuble race. Kind words aro tho bright flower* of earth's existence; they make a very paradise of the humblest homo the world can show. Use them, and espe? cially around the fircBide oirolo. They are jewejs beyond price, and make the weighed down spirits more glad than all other blessings the earth can give. Since that young man in Missouri ac? cidentally phot himself while on bis way to church, the other day, we have como to the conclusion that that part of our creed and confession of faith which re? quires ns all to go to ohurch with u pocket full of pistcls ought to be abo? lished. "Louis Irving, of St. Louis, blow his brains out, because a certain young lady would not marry him, and, after he was laid away, his falber eloped with the same girl." The probability is that if Louis' brains bad been worth blowing out, bo would have been happy with the girl to day. A gentleman, in search of a man to do ! somu work, met on his wny a lady not; r.o j imng as ehe onco was, and atked her: "Oan you tell me where I can Sud a mau?" "No, I cannot," eho replied, "for 1 havo been looking these twenty years for one myself." A buuch of shingles fell from a wagon on the Troy ferry boat reoontly, aud struck fairly upon the head of a colored woman, who said, "?'otighter b'shame to muts a cullud woman's bar dut way. j I wish de shingles fell ovah board." | The Boston Globe soys that the work-1 men aelebrated the opening of the Uoo sac tunnel by tapping two or three barrels of beer. There was uo inter? ference by the police, as the barrels were marked "nitro-glycc-iuo." "Pay me that twenty-fiva cunts you owe me I" roared a newsboy to a boot blaok. "Haven't got the currency, Jamesy," responded tho burnisher; "but I can give you a certified check." "Do try and talk a little common sense!" exclaimed n sarcastic young lady to a visitor. "Oh!" was the reply, "but wouldn't that be taking an unfair advantage of you?" A cruel man describes his mother-in law's eyes in the following outrageous manner: "She is so cross-eyed tbut whenevor she cries her tearB flow cms* ways over her back." - A German in Buffalo fell into a vat of beer, tho other day, and wus drowned He drank as hard as he could to save himself, aud would have succeeded hud not a flouting cork choked him.
