The largest number of im mi grants contributed by any single1 foreign nation was 166,843, from Ire? land and the British Islands, although Germany approaohed quite nearly that figure, sending as 149,671, aud tbe two nationB oombiued sent over threo-fourthb 1 of the. whole number. Of those who came from, the British. Islands, there were 74,801 from England, 77.344 itmn Ireland, 13,841 from Scotland and 840 from Wales. China is the third largest contributor, having sent us 20,292 Norway sent 16,247; Sweden, 14.3U9, and Denmark 4,931, making tbe ag? gregate Scandinavian arrivals 35,487. Franoe | sent 114.798, Italy, 8,715. Aus? tria 5,765. the Netherlands 3,811, Po? land 3,338, Switzerland 3,107, and probably a hundred other countries smaller numbers. Fifty-three Turks, three Syrians and one Persian came in. Fourteen persons oame from Africa, and one woman all tbo way from Malucca. The island of St. Helena sent us nine, and Iceland threo. Java contributed seven, and Borneo one. 138 little strangers were born at Bea. Of the whole number of immigrants, 2.98G wero. professional men, and 48.7b 2 Bkilled meobanios, whilst 234,439, large? ly composed of women aud children, wero without skilled occupation. Tbero were 104,423 laborers, 15,740 servauts and 7,038 merchant*, there beinii 18 women among the latter. Ono woman who arrived anuouuoed her-elf as a "preacher," and anothvr as a "ruler," wbilat 199 men and 7 women oalled themselves "travelers," there being also 13 commercial travelers. Of the men, one oalled himself a "trainer." There were also ono "showman," two "cIowub" and one "jockey." The Ashantees aud the English have had two fights which do not promise well for the.speedy ending of the war. In tbe first fight, we are simply told that the ^English] lost over forty men, but it is not said with whom the victory rested. In the second fight, tho Ashan? tees attacked the British in their en trenobments and were reputed, os a matter of course.
