Uni debt, in whic 8 ? makes tight times wkon pas nea to a people who import forel ods beyond their means to pay for i same. In the fiscal year eDdfDg Jone 80,1872, oar importations amounted to the unprecedented earn of $660,000,000. ThU year they are lest, and. .the nation, is trying to Reduce its indebt6dneaa to Europe. When most of this debt was contracted, cotton was worth in New York on average 21>? cents a pound. Now, when we are trying to oancel the same, ootton is worth in New ' York abont 15>? oenta in the same ourrenoy. These facts show the folly of running into debt and over-trading. It takes 810,000,000 a month in gold, or its equivalent, to.pay the interest in Eu? rope on our Government and other bonda. If these bonds and other credits were held in this country by savings banks and others, it would save paying an annnal tribute of some 8200, 000,000 in gold,'ootton, corn and other i Btaplee, as interest money that does not lassen our debt to foreigners'a dime. ThiB payment of bo much interest is the weak point or bump in the American sku)!. Instead of running headlong into debt, and selling corn and ootton at low figures to pay up old bills and make new1 ones on credit, we should reform our whole system of trade and finance and pay as we go." ' If we should only do this, pay as wo go, tbo South would be the moat pros porous Bection of the Union. Our peo? ple must livo within their income. Ex? travagance in' living is the curse ot the country, and.the people of Georgia are no exception tu the rule. In both oity and country wo rush into debt and live 1 beyond our means, just as if there was j never to be a day of settlement. The credit system is a positive ovil, and as long ns it lasts we fear that it will be impossible for our people to get out of I debt. A Leaven worth clergyman, while, preaching bis sermon ono Sunday even? ing, perceived a young man and woman under the gallery in 'tbo not of kissing each other behind a hymn book. The good parson did not fly into a passion and* discharge a volley of anathemas at the misguided pair, bnt, tender-hearted as Goldsmith's Village Pastor, he mere? ly broke his sermon short off in the] middle of "thirdly," and offered a fer? vent prayer in behalf of "the yonng man in the pink neoktie, and the maiden in bine bonnet and gray shawl, who I were profaning the sanotoary by kissing | one another in pew No. 68."
