THE D BY J. A. SELBY. G( A Wooden Raileoad?Fifteen Miles I an Hour Made with Easf,?The 01 ? rendon Press, of the 18th, contains n lengthy account of the wooden railroad or tramway which has been lately built, and which brings Manning Court House in communication with tho outside world: "The Bouth Caroliaa Central Railroad had been allowed to drop through the hands of the original projectors, and a considerable amount of cutting oat and grading Had been accomplished, when Mossrr, Liand Sc Pritohett, largo turpen? tine distillers, doing a very large busi? ness, purchased the right of way and set about to construct a road that would take their products to market. The road from Manning' to Lane's Turn-out, on the North-eastern Railroad, was cleaned out and graded, and laid with scantling. This road is 15>< miles long. The bod is constructed preoisely as all other rail? roads are. The whole structure above the bed is preoisely similar to other railroads, except, in plaoe of iron, this road has wooden stringers, four by five inobes, fastened down to the cross ties by long iron spikes, passing through both stringer and cross tie, making the stringers both steady and firm. ? These stringers are tivo inches upon their face, and the tracks or wheels of the running stock ore five inches upon their face. The friatiorr in running being distri? buted over tho wide surfaces, the injury to the rails will bo much less. Tho flanges to the wheels are two and-a-half inches deep, thereby preventing any probability of running off. A portion of the road hns been in operation five months, over which trains have been running daily, and most of the stringers are smooth. The rolling stock on the road is oommon, but quite effectual. Tho.engine is worth only SI,800, but is sufficient to carry seven or eight cars, loaded, at the rate of fifteen miles per hour. The proprietors arc now gono to the North for another engine of greater capacity. The road is regarded a suc? cess, and answers all the purposes of n first olass irou road. The road has cost about $1,200 per mile. By this roud, 50,000 pounds cau bo Bent twice a day." An election in North Carolina is to be held on the 7th of next month, for the purpose of adopting or rejecting certain proposed constitutional amendments. Among the number is ono ohacging the time of tho meeting of tho Legislature ] from one to two years. Messrs. Ells and Shuford, of Hickory Tavern, will erect a cotton factory on the Catawba River.
