Listen to tue Mocking Biud.?It is the property of this unparalleled feath? ered songster that he combines in his nature the usefnl in equnl proportions with the entertaining, feasting vigorous? ly, in fact, on beetles, moths, field mice and other such enemies of vegetation, when not charming the air with his dul? cet carols. But of late years his notes have been less and less heurd, and ho is slowly bat surely disappearing from his accustomed haunts. In France, the Code Circle, thanks to the kind provi? sion of itn founder, the great Napoleon, has a set title for the protection of birds, and in some lute legislation in Iowa the same mild extension is made of the tegis of the law. Under, if we mistake not, a fifty dollar penalty, the tomtit and blue bird, lark and wren, ere at libt rty'to chirp unmolested in oar North? west. Unless some such legislation is made in favor of the mocking bird in our own State, it will soon be an extinct Bpecies, as far, at any rate, as its propa? gation in Georgia is concerned. The young of these birds are invariably taken from the nest as soon as fonnd, and sent to the North or to Europe, where they sell at high prices, and as every brood thus disposed of is with? drawn from production, a sensible dimi? nution iu the number of these glorions warblers is noted. Beckless boys, also, jast learning to use a gun, and careless how sweet a voice is stilled, go long as they make the feathers fly, not an freqnontly kill the mocking bird with as little compunction as the crow; and then there are others again who trap them, though perfectly well assured the full grown bird can never accustom himsolf to captivity and will beat out his little life against the bars of his cage. De? spoiling the nest, however, is the great wrcng. Only yesterday we noticed a negro boy on Broad street with half a dozen of the little chirpera, which he had just taken from the nests, in a basket. Sometime since tho fact was noted of the consignment of 200 young mocking birds by a single steamer. These figures will givo some idea of the extent to which the spoliation is carried.
