We rodo over it ut tho ruto of thirty miles an hour iu a common box car. The road is smooth; tbo iron nsod is fifty-six ponnds to tbo yurd, with fish plates. The ties aro good uud placed near toge? ther. Tho ballasting is of sand, well tramped ?;wu. Tbo tressel work, witter wuya aud bridges' are well and carefully constructed It has scarcely any curves, and tbo grades aro ciisy. All ulong the liuo of the road aro largo and convenient depots. The lifo infused into this coun? try by the road is really wouderful. We saw more signs of energy aud improve meut in the three hours run from Yo rnusReu than in going from Charleston to Greenville. Wo cannot doubt but that tho local freight will sustain the road. Running as it has out into the woods only, its receipts have reached $12,000 per month from freights. When the line is finished, we are sure that this will bo tho favorite line from Northern Georgia to Savannah aud Charleston. \ Beaufort Republican. Saturday last, near old Concord Church, eleven miles South west of Ktioxvillo, Tenn., Mrs. Uobert Camp? bell, whose husband is a constable, left bei infant child with a nurse und went to tho spring, not far distant. Wheu the mother returned, a hideous sight mot bur distracted guze. The nurse be? ing seized with a fit, foil with the ohild in the lire-plaoe, and both were burned to death. Noah Session, tho colored soatnan who was (-truck upon tbe head by a boom, ou the 10th iust., while on tho passage from New York to Charleston, died yestorday. Disastrous Fins on Edibto Island.? Tue store .aud giu iiou?u o[ Mr. Jobo Wright situated on Edisto Island, about one mile from tbe E iinto wharf, were de? stroyed by fire, at I o'clock, on last Wednesday. The fire originated in the moteing room, and was cuased by an at? tempt to light a pipe made by a colored vornan employed therein. The progress of tho flames was so rapid that the gin house hands barely escaped with their lives. Several were severely burned. One colored woman had every particle of clothing burnt off of her, and her condi? tion was such that she died yesterday. The gin bouse contained ten MoOarthy gins, a corn mill and bolting machine, grain fans, elevators aud other machin? ery, as well a i about twenty-four bales of sea island cotton aud 2.UU0 bushels of sea island cotton seed, all of whioh were completely destroyed. The engine house and engine attached to the gin house were also destroyed. The store con? tained a large stock of dry goods, groce? ries, &o., all of which, excepting about 3150 worth of dry goods, were lost. There was no insurance. The loss is estimated at botweon $35,000 and $40, 000. Of the ootton destroyed, aboat eighteen bales were tho individual pro? perty of Mr. Wright. Tho remaining six bales wore owned by Major Carl Ber? lin, Messrs. G. L Marsteller, A. Berg, S. L. Baycard and a colored man named James Hutchinson. Of these, Major Berlin is tho heaviest loser. Mr. Wright is at present iu New York. Tho store aud giu house were ander the manage? ment of Mr. G. Stevens, who has had charge of them for the pnst four years. [Charleston News. I Imf-oktant to Business Men.?The case of S. P. Browu against John M. Jolly, cashier of tho Rieuluud National Bank, of Ohio, now before the Supreme Court of the United States from tho courts of this District, presents the question whether the endorser of ?t uote, not being tho actnul owner of tho fuud, can maintain a suit in his own name. Brown gave two notes to ono Grimes and another to Mrs. Jamison. Tho Grimes notes were ondoraed over to the cashier of the Bichland Bank, were discounted ! by the bank, and became its property. L'be Jamison uote was endorsed over to Grimes, and by him endorsed over to Jolly, as cashier, only for collection. Suit being brought on the uotes by Jolly, the defence was that, uot being the party in interest, he could not main? tain the suit; that the bank, in respect of the Grimes notes, und GrimoB in re? spect of tbo Jamison note, were the pro? per parties to briug suits for collection. The judgment was fur the plaintiff, the court refusing to charge as requested by tho defendant, aud charging the contra? ry, aud this writ of on or is brought to review the ruling and judgment. The defendant hero asserts that tho writ of error is brought for delay only that the law of the case is well settled as against the drawer of the uotes. Tho court at onco affirmed tho judgment below. [ Washington Republican, Nov. 9. Tbmublb Accident.?Mr. Wm. Kil dree reports one of the saddest accidents that we have had occasion yet to record. It happened Snnday afternoon, on the Obattahoocboe Hiver, twenty miles above Columbus, near McchanicBville, .Lee County, Ala. A purty of two mon and three young laditts were crossing the river in u bat teuu. One of tho survivors states that one of the ladies arose in the boat to eoare some ducks, when the vessel cap h zed and the entire party were precipi? tated into the water. The day was very cold, must have been intensely so on the river. Tho threo young ladies were drowned. Their names arc Misses St.sun ami Elizabeth Teel, and Josie Pike. The latter was formerly a resident of this city. Her body was recovored late Sun? day night. The other two bodies had uot been discovered when onr informant left tbo locality, Monday morning. The two gentlemen escaped. Tbo sad affair has cast a gloom over the entire community. The grief aud ooustertiutiun of ncur relatives was heart-rending. Brewstejr, an American, who killed the Count di Parma, a lieu? tenant of the National Onard, of Italy, in a duel some months ago,.has recently been arrested in Naples.
