The matter was brought before the oourl, and; after a due hearing of Ghinese witnesses, was dismissed. But what was curious in. tho affair was to near and seo the Chinese giving their testimony. Indeed, the plates were the chief featnre of the trial. This process of plate-breaking seems to be a special incident in Ohioeso law oases. It is the method adopted in Ohina to decide npou the justioe of a eanse. When two narties present them? selves before the judge, they take the precaution to bring with tbem a dozen or two Ohina plates, according to the importance of the trial. An exohange in thou made before the magistrate, and eaoh of the interested parties takes the platea of bis adversary. He whose plates ?tand the test the best is adjudged to have the right on bis side. The Chinese reasoning, justifying this process of plates, is about as follows: Oonfuoins is everything; when he permits the plates ?o break, it ib because their owner is wrong, and vice versa. With tho plates you have no corrupt juries, no pirtial judges, and no lawyers who make the troth appear false. The plateb break or they do not; they resist or they do not? all depends upon tbem. And this is why the Chinese, believo that their judicial -system is the best of all tho world.
