THE DAILY "Let oar fast Co neurea Attend the True Event.' BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., FRIDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 13, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 151 THE RESULT IN MAINE.-The returns rom this State indicate a Radical loss of betweeu 4,000 and 5,000, as compared with the Governor's majority of 1868, and aboot 13,000 on that received by Grant. The aggregate vote ia within a few thousands of the total cast that year, which was the largest ever polled in the State. In other words, tho Radicals have lost nearly twenty-five per cent, of their majority, on a fuir and full test, and under the moat favorable circum? stances. The same Bcalo of diminution, applied to the oloae and doubtful States, would carry every one of them for Gree? ley. This is the result at the very sonroe of Radicalism, where the partisan fires of prejudice bara intensely, where the organization ia perfect, and the influence of power and patronage is most sensibly folt. The policy of the Administration is shaped exclusively in the interest of New England, by New England men, and for the benefit of New England pockets. The legislation ia controlled by if combi? nation of the manufacturing interests, through oommittees known to be subsi? dized for their advantage. The Treasury Department, with its immense ramifica? tions, is ran in the same groove for the bond-holders and banks, and against the tax-payers, who have to bear tho burdens of a corrupt system, devised to promote monopoly, and to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. The New England States have accumu? lated immense wealth under a policy which has been contrived by their own hands, to drain the resources of the South and West, and make them pay enormous tribute for every manufactured article that enters into common consump? tion. .They care nothing for candidates or principles, except so far as they may servo the purposes of aggrandizement, which are nearest and dearest to the heart of that selfish section. Support of Grant means simply that he is the boat instrument to advance their designs, and nothing more. - Washington Patriot. The English papers are still full of Livingstone, Stanley, and "the search and relief expeditions." One of the last letters-that by a "Barrister-at-law" pointe oat that the "armed force" of ' which we have heard so muoh was Bent np to Livingstone at the expense of the Boyal Geographical Society oft)London, ana not at that of "Mr. Stanley or his employer." In this letter Stanley is charged with "diaingenuonsness," in im? puting cowardice to the leaders of the English expedition, and in not promptly refuoing to receive credit for an action which he did not perform. TEE LAUGEST DIAMOND IN THE WORLD. A Malay rajah is said to possess a larger diamond than any in the world, and more valuable than any of the great gems of Europe. It is said to be mnob larger than the Koh-i-noor, and to weigh 465 carats. AB the Koh-i-noor is only as big as a very small turnip, the new dia? mond is certainly several chalks ahead of it in size. ^.'..A, touching. siehLiL says the Pitts? burgh Post-"Mosby, the guerrilla, and William Lloyd Garrison, the Northern Abolitionist, who pronounced the Con? stitution a 'league with death and a co? venant with hell,' 'clasping hands across the bloody chasm,' and howling in uni? son for Grant and corruption." Theodore Hook's "Ram shot tom Let? ters," published nearly fifty years ago, have been reprinted, and poor Mrs. Partington has the best reason of com? plaining that some of her beat bits were booked long before she mended a pen. An officer of the French consulate at Jerusalem has found a magnificently en? graved monolith shaft belonging to He? rod's Temple. The inscription is in Greek and forbids the entrance of the Gentiles into the inner courts. John Smith recently died in Georgia, leaving 91 grand-ohildren and 9,000,000 name-sakes. To Rent.
