DIMINUENDO.-This is tho head of a short leading article on spooiul business, which we find in the Winsted (Conn.) Herald, of August 2. It is a fair and frankly expressed comment upon the folly of publishing u larger paper than circumstances will naturally warrant: "Experience keeps a dear school. Wo have been taking a course of lessons on the theory and practice of carrying too mach sail, and rather guess we have learned that branoh by heart. This week, we present our readers with tho compliments of the dog-day Beason on a somewhat reduced sheet. When sub? scribers become more plentiful and ad? vertisers less inoonstuut-when A. T. Stewart moves his atoro up here, and horse-cars run from Lathrop's cutlery to the olook 6hop-when we can get even one dollar a week out of the noble army j of chamber-maids who will pay a Now York paper 32,000 per day for announc? ing that 'situations' aro 'wanted'-in short, when the borough of Winsted be? comes a city of 7,000 or 8,000 inhabi? tants, with proportionately populoue suburbs-thou wo may nguiu deem it ad? vantageous to enlarge. If we do before that time, please consider ns as not ex? actly right in our wits." VON MOIITKE'S REPORT.-The firat vo? lume of tho report of Geu. You Moltke on tho Prussian plan of campaign in the recent war with Franco has just been published. It shows what we all knew before, that Prussia was fully prepared for the contest. It tells us, however, moro than this. lb exhibits to us some of the secret and efficient equipment, the thoroughly studied and skillfully laid plans, the topographical knowledge of the Frenoh border, and the complete information acquired of the capacity of the railroads of France, the state of her army, and its plaoes of projected con? centration. The whole scheme of the war waa worked out in Von Moltke's closet, with tho accuracy of a mathema? tical problem. On the side of Prussia all was, from tho beginning, olear, piain and known; on the side of Franco all was confusion, whioh, after the first onset, became "worse confounded," darkness and official blindness. It is to be hoped that Gen. Von Moltke, now an old man, may live to finish his history of this wonderful campaign. No other hand but that of the man who so ably planned it could adequately describe it. m *-4> STBANGE AND FATAL HALLUCINATION. A resident of York County, Pu., who .was the possessor of a competency suffi? cient to support himself and family dur? ing their natural lives, became possessed of the idea that they were all coming to want and would die of starvation. This hallucination took such firm hold upon his mind that no persuasions on the part of his friends were sufficient to divest him of it. Day after day it grow stronger for years. His greatest anxiety seemed to be for his family, and he de? termined, in order to save them, he would be compelled to starve himself. This he carried into exeoution, and re? cently became a victim of this all-absorb? ing and fatal illusion of his life, and death occurred from actual starvation, voluntarily and persistently imposed upon himself. For several days ho re? fused all sustenance, and although ef? forts were made to foroe food into his mouth, his strength commenced to de? cline, and soon after he died in a starv? ing condition. His dying words a few minutes before his death were, "I knew I would starve." THE PLEASUBB OP NEWSPAPER PUB? LISHING IN PEBU.-During the recent unsuccessful venture of the War Minis? ter of President Balta to establish him? self as Dictator, ut least ono of the news? paper offices had an experience of revo? lution by no means so agreeable as a midnight serenade from even a collection of discordant broken horns, blown by masioianB "half seas" over, and utterly regardless of the delicate adjustment of printers' nerves. The SoutJi Pacific Times had suspended publication for a day or two. The office in Callao was fired into, and a nine-pound shot fell into the sitting-room of Mr. Lawton, the pro? prietor. The foreman of the paper, named Montagnao, was shot dead with a rifle ball, and Mr. Lawton was conducted under escort to the American flag-ship Pensacola. The Times expected to re Bumo on the 30th July. An interesting young lat!y was arrested in Kansas City, a few days ago, and gave the following aooount of herself: She was born in Virginia, and when quite young, ran away with a circus. After performing for several years as a female gymnast, she learned the shoe-maker's trade, passing boreelf off as a man. She then tried blacksmithing awhile, and shod horses in the army. Being taken prisoner, she revealed her sex, and so get away. Since then, she has been a rough, quarreling, gambling, drinking, fighting, working on a railroad, getting in and out of jail, Seo. Englishmen resident in India have lately manifested an inclination to adapt themselves to the customs of the country rather too freely, as far as matrimonial ties are ooncerned. Heretofore it was only necessary for them to formerly em? brace Mohammedism in order to in? crease their family of wives ad libitum. The Madras Presidency is now in conse? quence considering the expediency of making it unlawful for a Christian to chango his religion, provided he is a married man. In this event, sauce for the goose will no longer be sauce for the gander. A Grant paper in Albany chronicles another straw. A bet was made that 75 Grant men would passa certain point be? fore 25 Greeleyites would pass. The Grant men won, as 78 Grantites passed to 17 Greeleyites. Tho point to be passed was in tho lino of a back alley saloon.
