I Ll I ; - RABAOAH.-'The frequent allusions in the cable telegrams to the political play entitled "Rabagas," bas which more than halt the time the correspondents or printers; between them contrive to get twisted into "Bagabas," and to the popular outbreaks and excitement by whioh its performance in the larger cities of France is usually attended, may give interest to a brief outline of the plot and motive of this now celebrated comedy. It is the work of 'M. Bardou, several of whose plays, through English or Ameri? can adaptations, are already familiar to play-goers in this country. It ie, as already stated, a political comedy, the object of whioh is, apparently, to expose to ridicule the career and pretensions of M. Gambetta and bis friends-who con? stituted the government of national de? fence at Toura and Bordeaux during the Gorman siege of Paris-the present De? mocratic party, or party of tbe left, in the Frenoh Legislative Assembly. Al? though the public, representations of this play has proved a prolific source of disorder, both in tbe capital and in the {>rovinoea, but more particularly in the arge cities in the South of France, where the Democratic element is strong? est, it appears to enjoy tbe seoret encou? ragement, if not patronage, of M. Thiers and his government. It ie, in fact, a curious commentary upon the present Btate of things in Franoe, that while ' public celebrations of the anniversary of the taking of the Bastile (July 14) were forbidden by the Government in Paris, Lyons, Marseilles aud Bordeaux, because it waa apprehended they would be con? verted into politioal demonstrations by tbe friends of M. Gambetta, this play ol Rabagas, whioh is expressly leveled at Gambetta, is permitted to be performed. But to the play itself. The scene ic laid in the little principality of Monaco, whioh, when the play opens, is supposed to be under the rule of a despotio prince. There is, however, a democratic and revolutionary party in Monaco, whiot holds its meetings at the tavern of th< "Flying Toad," and publishes an orgar. called the Carmagnole. Over the door ol the "Flying Toad" is a notice postee that a fine of half a franc will be im posed for any allusion to the exiatenoe o: a God. The Carmagnole contains artiolei showing how workingmen are entitled t< ten hours' pay for five hours' work, anc to a whole holiday on Monday, to reoo ver from the effects of Sunday's dissipa tion. It also informs a soldier who wri te: for information, that "as a citizen," hi ia nnder no obligation to obey his of fleers. The members of this party o "moral ideas," who aim to be the Booia and politioal reformers o? Monaco, ar men of broken fortunes and unsuccess ful careers, lawyers and doctors wh? have failed in praotioe, a dramatist wh has been hissed, a defaulting cashier, cashiered officer, three bankrupts, tw blacklegs, seven idiots and eight dru nfc ards I The leader of the party and obie editor of the Carmagnole is Rabagas, rhetorical ad voca to who successfully dc feuds a prisoner who has kicked an ol game-keeper to death, upon the groun that he had not murdered a man, but wa only demonstrating his hatred of a odious principle. There is, of course the inevitable Polish exile, a genen . with a name ending in "owaki," wh proposes to lead the projected revolt tiou, provided his views are agreed t upon the subject of pay and allowance: and the style of his uniform, which something gorgeous. While these conspirators are plan ni n their .evolution, their leader, Rabaga is l&tit?d to a court ball, and to the di (Vf.?.!?' nt.Kto associator^ concludes lhat I will accept the invitation, although, i they tell bim, he will be compelled f go in ] knee-breeches, the livery i lacqueys. The biting nature of the satire, mt more poignant by the admixture of tri whioh it, contains, may be inferred fr this brief description. That such a p should give deep offence to the Rep lioan party in France, who see thc Rel ve? thoa caricatured and held up ridiculo, is but natural. Few people < stand ridicule, and Frenohmen, less tl any other nation, perhaps, relish be laughed at. The amour propre o: Frenchman is SO sensitive that, not iDg the most patient of disputants any time, the moment he peroeives t it ianthe ob j dot of his opponent to b him, his actions, bis opinions or his sooiatioas np to derision, he loses tem aud behaves accordingly. Mobs hr therefore, greeted, es stated, alu every publie representation of thia play, while, at the* same time, its frequent re? production show's that there is a large] party in Franoe who enjoy the satire, and sire pleased to see the Republican leaders mude ridiculous. The moral to j be drawn from the play itself, and from the manifestations of popular temper to whioh it has given rise, is not the most favorable augury for the success of what, in America, at least, is understood by Republican institutions.-Baltimore Sun.
