The flesh was weak, and the bone too easily reached. They felt the necessity for something just as bad and not quito so wearing. They have met the necessity in a new abomi? nation that they call the "bassoon." We think it will satisfy the moBt exact? ing of them. Maud wonld have been only too glad to come into the garden, when her Tennysonian lover urged her to fly from the sound of the "Ante, violin, bassoon," if this had been the bassoon referred to. The instrument is a hollow reed of greater or less length and diameter, ac? cording to taste and opportunity. A couple o! inches from one end a hole is made in the side of the reed, like the mouth-hole of a flute. The end nearest this hole is covered with thin paper or very thin India rubber, and the other end is left open. The performer applies his month to the hole in the side, and "sings" into the instrument. The voice strikes the rubber covering and is pro? jected out of the free end. The result is all that could bo desired. A broken hand organ and a whole battery of "combs" wonld sot equal it in horrible? ness. We have nothing against the boys, but really the dog law seems of minor significance while the bassoons are around.-Pittsburg Chronicle. THB LOST BOY.-The Boston Traveller thinks the following story a good illus? tration of the way a good many strip? lings, in "jackets and trousers," miss their "bearings" and their wits: The pet of a family, residing not far from Lagrange street, is a boy who has recently passed his fifth year, and hav? ing jost donned his first jacket and trou? sers, is attending a primary school. The other afternoon he failed to come home at the nsnal hoar, muoh to the alarm of the household, and after a long search, he was found, some time after dark, at the Providence depot. He was sent to bed without much ex? planation, though it is possible his treatment was what Solomon would have recommended in such an omergenoy. The next morning he was down to the breakfast table, evidently none the worse for the lesson, and perhaps the wiser. Taking advantage ot a lull in the conver? sation customary at the morning meal, he turned bis grave countenance toward the lady at the head of the table, and giving free vent to his overcharged mind, he exclaimed: "I'll tell you, mamma, how it happen? ed. After eohool I went part of the way home with Mary-, and at the corner of a street where she left me I kissed her, and she kissed me, and then I found I was lost."
