THE DAILY 'Let our fast Censaros PHOMX. Attend the True Event.' BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MOKNING, JULY 23, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 106. PANTIES AND THEIR CANDIDATES. Some of the nnti-Greeley organs are very unhappy becauso they don't know whether, in the Greeley and Brown movement, the Democratic party has ab? sorbed the Liberals or the Liberal party the Demoorats. It is true that the same candidates have been nominated by both parties, and the same platform adopted, bat, notwithstanding all this, we oan as? sure these searchers after knowledge that there iu no absorption whatever in the oase. The Liberal party has not ab? sorbed the Democratic party, and the Democratic party bas not absorbed the Liberal party thus far, nor does either of them propose to do anything of tho kind. Both parties are supporting Horaoe Greeley in tho most ingenuons and can? did way possible. They have entered into an alliance, offensive and defensive, knowing, indeed, their respective his? tory and career, but patriotically deter? mined to act together on precent issues for the public good. The members of the Republican party, whose views are represented in the Cin? cinnati resolutions, and who seek reform in the administration of natioual affairs, have the advantage of the Democracy, whose views are represented in the Bama resolutions, and who also seek roform in the administration of national affairs, in having originally selected the candidates for the Presidency and Vice-PreBidenoy from among themselves. And yet we are not at all sure that the Demoorats have not full compensation in the proud consciousness that they have risen above party when the daty of patriotism de? manded it. Governor Brown's tribute to the disinterestedness and self-abnega? tion of the Democratic party in bis New Haven speech was not undeserved. The alliance between the two wings of the anti-Radical party will probably be? come still closer as time goeB on, until the anion will be as complete in every State aa it is in Illinois. In other words, the parties whose conventions have adopted the same platform and nomi? nated the same candidates will after a while be consolidated into one homoge? neous organization, as they are already united in principle. Why not? How can it possibly matter to the Democrat what hos been the politics in the past of the maa who thoroughly agrees with him on the vital issues of the day? "What does it signify te the Liberal what the opinions of those who accord with him now on all questions affecting the public interest have been on issaes for? ever settled? Garl Soharz said truly when he de? clared that this great political movement means something more than to defeat Grant. Aa far aa we are concerned we should be tor "anything tu beat Grant." Scarcely anybody could be presented whose election we should not deem pre? ferable to his. Almost any chango would be for the better. Bit, in their arrangements to bring about this most desirable result, the opponents of Grant ism have effected their organization on principles essential to the national wel? fare. A great national peace organiza? tion has been accomplished. Honest; iu the administration of the Govern? ment and fraternity and reform have been proclaimed as the fundamental principles. Even if Greeley were de? feated a great good would have been gained, for a powerful party for peace and nationality would be in existence. It is of small consequence what the op? ponents of Grantism in this contest cal themselves. If they aro Democrats, they are Demoorats of the Jacksot Behool. If they are Republican, theil Bepublioanism is of the Jefferson type. But Horaoe Greeley will not be de ' feated. He will be the next President o the United States, if the signs of thc times have any significance at all. Tin people are tired of having the oivil wa: fought over again at every election They are tired of nepotism, of corrap tions, of incompetency, of negligence of tbs subordination of tbe civil autho rity to military power, and of a policy a onoe sectional and selfish. The Repub Heans, instead of finding Grant a Kinj Log, as they expected, have discovero In him a King Stork in all matters wher< his personal interests and ambitions ar oonoerned. There can be no mistqk aboat the mighty ground-swell that i taking place. There are evidences of i throughout all tbe length and breadth c the land. It is felt everywhere. Gran and bis friends are jostled oat of thei propriety by it. One after another tbos who have been most prominent as leac ers of the Republican party are leavin Grant and going to Greeley. Many c them have gone already, and many mor will go. The Liberals who have airead given in their adhesion constitute a mot formidable array, and are already namoi ouB enough, noting in concert with tb Democracy, to elect their ticket. ] things go on os they have been doing, i is not improbable Gratz Brown's predii tion that Grout will not carry tbrc States will be verified. In August, the North Carolina eta tion takes place, 'and that State will pr< bably pronounce against the Radical Later, Pennsylvania and Indiana ai Bure to do the same thing, and very pr bably Illinois. After the result of the; State elections is proclaimed, the Gra: people will feel like throwing np tl sponge. They might as well do it wit oat waiting for that, for all tho good will do them to hold out. The Radicals will, of course, make tl best fight they eau in this contest, f their leaders know very well that if th lose, their last chanco will be gon They cannot stand defeat. The wlic strength of tho Grant party oonsista the publio patronage, and when it is ? prived of that, it must of necessity f to pieces. 60.0UO office-holders soi tered throughout tho United Stab every man of them rendered active ai energetic by the fear of losing bis brc and batter, are, we admit, a formidal force, especially as they have fun almost without limit at their cornamc Bat the offio3-holders and their mon will not bo sufficient to divert the people from the resolve they have made to cant the money-changers and thieves ont of the temple of liberty. The people can? not be bribed to acquiesce in a continu? ance of the abomioablo practices, the I corruptions, the usurpations aud tho j centralizing policy of tho present Admi? nistration. Much has been said about Horace j Greeley's qualifications for the Presi? dency. Nobody with a tbimblo-ful of brains can doubt that he is infinitely better fitted for that high office than the .stolid, ignorant and avaricious person who now holds it. Greeley certainly has his peculiarities, but he is at once un honest man and a statesman, and we seo uo reason to doubt that he will make an excellent President. Wo may much question whether- tbo best nnd most gifted of our Presidents could have made the New York Tribune what it is, had he tried ever so bard, and the admi? nistrative talent which Mr. Greeley has displayed in the conduct of that great Journal is at least prima facie evidence that be will not be greatly at fault in tho management of the Execntive Depart? ment of the Government. At all events, it is pretty certain that the American people are determined to give honest Horace a trial, and we are not at all ap? prehensive that he will not acquit him? self to the satisfaction of his friends.
