A FRIGHTENED YOUNO MAN.-A young man from tho country, about eighteen years of age, recently made bin first | visit to Nashville, and registered at the Maxwell House. At a late hour he re? tired, the servant conducted him to one of Otis Brother's elevators, and, telling him to "roll in," went to call the con? ductor, who was in the parlor with a friend. When he came back he found the verdant yonth half undressed; and before the conductor had timo to say anything, the young men began talking .bont the little room and the funny bed. About this time the elevator had started, and just as it reached the floor above, the half naked youth gave a terrible I scream, shouting, "Earthquake, Lord have mercy upon mel" at the top of his voioe. The operation of the elevator was, after mnoh difficulty, explained to the frightened boy, and a bottle ? of "apple-jack," restored him to his nor? mal condition. .COFFEE CULTURE TN THE UNITED STATES.-Tho Mexicans have taken np with unwonted energy the subject 'of raising coffee for the United States, and a party of Costa Ricans, with a former President of that country at their head, have pnrohssed a tract of land near San I Rafael,' Cal., and design to cultivate the aromatic berry. Coming from Central Am?rica, where coffee is raised with suc? cess, these Costa Ricans ought to know the requisites of I a country for the busi? ness, u They, have chosen the middle re? gion of the State, though tbe general idea ia that there are places in Southern California where tho experiment might be tried with better hope of oucoess.
