THE DAILY ''Let our nut Censares Attend the True Event.' BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., SATURDAY MORNING, JULY 20, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 104. "TSrf Croquet eis mn AccompllsUrricRi. t We have Beea recently various direo tiona published in'r?gard to playing cro? quet akitlfally, and as the game is be? coming very popular, we have devoted some attention to tbe subject, and our conclusions can be implicitly relied on. No Bight can be more delightful than a neatly clipped, pretty shaded lawn, on a summer's evening, ooonpied by a gay party of yoong men and maidens en? gaged in this fascinating amasement. The picture of bright ooatames and fair faces framed between the green sward and the bright foliage, haunts the me? mory of a.pasaor-by. The happy laugh? ter and low replies linger in his ears as he goes on. Very many persons are particular in regard to the kind of mallets whiou they nae, some preferring box-wood and others hard maple. It is unbecoming in a man to have any narrow prejudices on the subject. No matter whether he is equipped with a trip-hammer or clothes pounder, his time will pass away as a dream in the morning-provided he daily has a nice party to play with. It is oommon to have preferences in regard to the method of placing tho hoops and the length of the wire to be devoted to eaob. Snob considerations are of trifling imporUuce. No matter how they are setup, or whether they are made of rusty iron or whale-bone, if you have the right kind of a company to play with. It is also immaterial what sort of cro? quet balls are used, provided they can ' be induced to roll a little. However, it is well to pay enongh attention to them cot to lose them as twilight comes on. A yoong lady shoald croquet any ball she can get a ohanoe at-every time-il she has a pretty foot and ankle. If you wear number nines, and have your pedal cathedrals adorned with bat tresses in the shape of bunions, beware of croqueting. We have seen much da? mage done by carelessness in this way. If a handsome yoong lady makes s bad shot, she should insist upon trying it over. If a gentleman Upon tho opposite sid? achieves a neat stroke, make him try il over-if you are a pretty girl. Th< Btriot adherenoe to these two rales is api to add unwonted zest and excitement tc the game. If a pretty girl has been sent up coun try by some barbarous opponent, it de notes a very high style of play to follov her immediately. You can use the same ball as man; times as you like before running a hoop if you aro good-looking and impudent Otherwise you shoald not try to bani anybody about, as you are good for nc thing bat standing the hard knocks youl self. Many experts lay down regulations fo the proper course of play after one bc comes a rover; but a really skillful artic will seldom trouble himself to arrive c that distinction. He will devote hine self exclusively to the finer points of th game. A player must have no exclusive rc gard for partners. . -Get near anybod who is agreeable, and assist any on ?whoso smiles are worth winning. Lovers should play oroquet alone, an not in large parties, as they go to ano extreme lengths to sacrifice themselvc for each other's benefit. A great diversity of opinion exists t to the amount of light required fe croquet. We think the best rule is tb test of Potnam at Bunker Hill-seeic the -whites of yonr enemies* eyes, shade or two of darkness beyond th might not be amiss. Tbe game of oroquet is very beautifo being played in the open air I The fa that there is so muoh swaying of heai mallets necessary, gives it a title to 1 classed among the athletic as well as tl graceful exercises. It may, therefore, I recommended for muscular developmen The lower limbs are benefited as well the arms, from the faot that so mu< walking about tbe lawn is oalled for the course of the play. Keenness vision and certainty of touch are ul: cultivated in this delightful sport. I vention ie sharpened iu the suggestii of new combinations, and prudence needed in calculating for them, ai practico is needed in carrying them ot We have seen one couple enjoy ea other's conversation ull through a gan by good management. Its chief a shining characteristic, however, is i peculiar excellence in a sooial point view. It was made as a veil for Air tion. Its mazes are favorite ambuseac for Cupid. It affords opportunities 1 the bold, excuse? for the cautious, co\ for the bashful. It is the great a original matrimonial promoter. It is laxatiou for the wise, and better tb talk for the silly. Parents shoald c courage it. No well regulated fam should be without facilities for Fathers of marriageable daught shoald not neglect this remedy. . love-sick swains should, fly to it for lief. It is warranted a certain core twenty doses. OURSELVES.-Interested journals n< not worry about the sacrifices they si pose the Tribune to be asking. Tl may or may not be relieved to know t the oironlation of the Tribune ' is lar than it was a year ago, and that its orease since the commencement of present year, bas been constant fi month to month, and more espeoii daring the past month.
