A TENNESSEE SNAKE STORY.-A negro boy, fourteen or fifteen years old, had an unpleasant encounter, last Monday after? noon, with a Bnake of the species known aa a "ooaohwhip." The boy Bays he went out in the neighborhood of the Worley Fields, about a mile from town, gathering up some milch cows which fre? quently graze in that direction. When first discovered, the snake was reposing at full length across the road. It didn't seem disposed to move out of the way, and the boy pioked np a little stick and threw at it, hitting it two or three inches below the head. Immediately, and os quick as lightning, the snake grabbed its tail in its mouth and rolled toward him like a hoop, and before he could wheel to run, it straightened itself and commenced lashing him around the legs. He broke at once for town at the top of his speed, the snake, whiah seemed to be inspired by the spirit of au old Blave-holder, fol? lowing and every twenty or thirty yards nnhooping itself and "popping him," a? the boy termed it, hard and fast. The last time the ooachwhip bit him, be thinks be was jost at the turn of the hill, above Mr. Fisher's residence, where he met a gentleman going out on horseback, who saw the snake roll itself over the fenoe into Oleage's field and disappear among the grass and weeds. The poor negro says he thought it was tho original aarpiat, and when he got in sight of town and struck the home stretch, he was making faster time than any locomotive ever did over the Eaat Tennessee road. He showed the welts on his legs, and Bays, "Next time white folks wants them eows from the Worley Fields, they can jost fotoh 'em derselves." Some years ago there was a family of tho coach whip Boccies near tho field, but it was supposed, until this occurrence, that they had migrated or beoame ex? tinct. The boy says he thinks the snake was about eleven feet long, body not much thioker than his thumb, with a white ring oircling the neck, and that every time it struck him, its tail oracked like a catt whip.-Athens Post. * A WOMAN RULED OUT ON ACCOUNT OF HER SEX.-Mrs. Dr. Mary J. Studley ranked third in a recent competitive ex? amination for five positions on the house staff of the Charity Hospital in New York; 'but a resolution was passed by the Medical Board, in which they said to the commissioners of charities and correction, that they "deemed it in? expedient to appoint a female to suoh a position," and five men were appointed, three of whom passed below Mrs. Stud? ley. The case will be carried before the courts. A middle-sized boy, writing a compo? sition on "Extremes," remarked that we should endeavor to avoid extremes, especially those of wasps und bees. ??????????????????????I 'Pickles, Fruits and Vegetables. -fl Kf"V DOZEN, in glass and cane, of tho lUvl choicest kinda, as follow?: English Piccalili and Chow Chow; California Apricots and Bartlett Pears; Pine Apples, fresh Peach? es, Plums, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Oreen Corn, Asparagus, Spanish Olives.
