THE DAILYjflfc' H(EN IX. '"Let our just Censure? ^^^^^^S^^^^^^W? Attend the True Event." BY J. A.'SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., SATU?DAY MORNING, JUNE 1, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. G3. H?NTINO DB. LIVINGSTONE.-Theques tion of th? movements of Dr. Living* stone was disonssed on the evening of May 13. in the Royal Geographical So? ciety of London. The most interesting feature of the council was the quaint and i original view of the New York Herald's correspondent taken by the President of the sooiety, Sir Henry Rawlinson. This gentleman remarked that "it had been generally inferred from the intelligence that Mr. Stanley (the correspondent in ?a cation) had discovered and relieved Dr. livingstone; but if there had been any discovery and relief, it was Dr. Li ring stone who had discovered and relieved Mr. Stanley." This, it will be per? ceived', puta the matter in an entirely different. The faot is that there have buen a oouple of theories regarding the relation of this correspondent to the missing explorer; first, that thero was.no correspondent at all; second, that there was a correspondent from whose pursuit Dr. Livingstone was making all haste possible. And sow comes Rawlinson to I confuse this already muddled affair with the suggestion that the doctor disco? vered the correspondent-a fact whioh.| would seem to indicate that it was Mr. Stanley, after all, who was evading Dr. Livingstone, whose superior tactics, however, enabled him to overtake the fleeting journalist. LIABILITY OF DRUGGISTS.-It is said that n case that will prove interesting and important to druggists is about to be tried in New York. A husband sues to recover $10,000 damages for the death of his wife by an over-dose of laudanum j clandestinely Bold to her. He alleges that, previoua to becoming addicted to the use of this drug, she was healthy, in? telligent and happy, bot that abe after? wards beoatno depressed in spirits and dull in mind, and that her health was irreparably shattered. He oh argea that the Belier knowingly sold tho laudanum to her, while fully aware of its disastrous effeots. It is a delicate question to de? termine in how far a restraint can bo placed upon the sale of opium, or to what extent a druggist would be reap on Bible for selling.it io a secret manner and with knowledge of the barm being ac? complished. There appears to be no reason why the druggist should be 1 held to a stricter account than the liquor dealer, whose immunity, exaept from statutory laws, has never been ques? tioned. Therefore, it is probable that thia husband in search of damages, which are most likely purely speculative, will be disappointed. A CATHOLIC VIEW OP .THE SITUATION. Here is the verdict of the Catholic Tele graph, edited by the Rev. Edward Pur? cell, on "Honest Old Horace," the Lib? eral nominee: * "The nomination of Horace Greeley to the Presidency by the Cincinnati Con? vention, in spite of the political ma? nouvre to confer that honor upon some ambitious aspirant less worthy,, more pliant and moro easily managed, is a strong indication of a more healthy change in the political life of tho nation. 'The baro nomination, even if it be not followed by an election of the chosen candidates, will strike all who watched the plans and plottings of seotionul cliques to foroo their favorite for section? al purposes upon tho people, as not only a staggering rebuke, to political jobbery, the great curso of the country, but a cheering sign that the. re-aotionary movement against political corruption and disgrace will have victorious force and ending influence." Hon. Montgomery Blair, in a letter to the Newark (NJ J.) Journal, says: "It is no time to resent individual grievan ces. Greeley hus dealt me many heavy blows, but since he has turned his. guns against Grant, and has come to rescue the country from the brutal tyranny which HO degrades us all, my heart grows warm to him, and is purged of all resent? ment for the heavy blows bebas struck us in past conflicts, by the reflection that it is only because he has boen so stern an opponent of the Democracy 'through lifo that he has it now in his power to ???ve the country."
