? ra? f.\ . cv i THE DITLY "Let our fut Censures Attend the Trne Event.' BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., WEDNESDAY MORNING, MAY 15, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 48. OHASLOTTE, COLUMBIA AND AUGUSTA BAILBOAD.-The Cheater (S. C.) Reporter does not consider tbs reoent failure of the stockholders of this corporation to hold their annual meeting at Charlotte as accidental, and thus proceeds to fortify ita conclusions: The failure to hold a meeting was not accidental. Mr. Newcomer, of Balti? more, a member of the Southern Secu? rity Railway Company, to whom tho ina-I jori ty of the stook belongs, was in the city, but purposely held himself aloof from the meeting to prevent a quorum of stock being present. Many conjec? tures were indulged in as to the motivoB that prompted this coarse on his part. The friends and opponents of the pre? sent administration of the road both drew enoonrageoieut from the action of Mr. Newcomer. Tho former said, if it is the parp?se of the Security Railway Company to make a obange in tho of gcers of the road, surely Mr. Newcomer would organize the meeting and elect whomsoever that company wishes; that his not making a change is the highest evidence that the company is satisfied with the present management. The lat? ter, on the other hand, said if the South? ern Seourity Company are pleased with Mr. Johnston's management of the affairs of the road, what is more natural than the meeting should be held, and his ad? ministration endorsed by a re-election. Our own opinion, from all we could pick np, is that the Southern Seourity Com? pany bad determined to make a thorough ohange in the administration of the road at this meeting; but that Mr. Cass, the President of the company, and Mr. Walters, of Baltimore, a large stock? holder and prominent member, being prevented by other engagements from attending. Mr. Newcomer did not care to take the sole responsibility of making the proposed ob anges, and therefore kept away from the meeting, so as to prevent an eleotion being held. An ex? tra meeting will, no doubt, be called in a month or two, and the policy of the Southern Seourity Company, whatever that may be, carried out. We bave before us the reports of the President, Superintendent and Trea? surer, prepared for tue inspection of the stockholders, showing the'operations of the road for the year 1871, and its finan? cial condition on the 1st day of January, 1872. From the President's report we ' ascertain that the bonded debt of the company ?mounts to $1,281,798.90, and the floating debt to $844,429.15. making a total indebtedness of $2,126,227.95. The total earnings of the road for the year were $594,472.92, and the operating | expenses were $357,665.12, leaving a net balance of $236,807.20, ali of whioh, ex? cept the sum of $65,181.85, oash in troa pury 31st December, 1871, was applied to the payment of taxes, interest and construction. This showing does not leave any hope for a dividend to stock? holders at an early day; and accounts satisfactorily for the present almost no? minal value of the stock. A young couple who had been holding a cozy tete-a-tete in a retired aloove at a party in Nashville, were somewhat abashed, on emerging into the party, to find that around the young man's neck there was the print of two arms in chalk and diamond dust, on his shoulder a quantity of gold powder, and other equally unaccountable- phenomena ob? servable elsewhere. A Philadelphia woman who was so in? discreet as to break her leg, bot too modest to have a doctor set it, has died from mortification. North Carolina Hay. IJt? BALES good N. O.
