Tile liegend of Easter Egg?.
BX FITZ- JAM ES O'Ulli EN.
"Dearest papa," says my boy to me,
As ho merrily climbed on his father's knoc,
"Why are those eggs that yon see me hold
Colored so fluolv with bine and gold?
And what is the beautiful bird tbat laxa
Such beautiful eggs on Easter days?"
"You have heard, my boy, of tho mau who
diod,
Crowned with keon thorns and crue iii ed;
And how Joseph, the wealthy-whom God re?
ward
Cared for the cor pao of hie martyr'd Lord,
And piously tombed it within tho rook,
And closed the gato with a mighty block.
Now close by tho tomb a fair treo grew.
With pendulous loaves and blossoms of blue;
And deep In the greentree's shadowy breast
A beautiful Biuging-bird sat on her nest,
Whioh was bordered with mosses like mela
ohite,
And held four eggs of an ivory whito.
Now, when tho bird from her dim recess
Beheld the Lord in his burial dross,
And looked on the heavenly faoe so pale,
And the dear feet pierced with tho cruol nail,
Her heart nigh broke with a sudden pang,
And out of the depth of her Borrow she sang.
AU night long, till the morn was up,
She Bat and sang in h or moss-wreathed cup,
A song of Borrow as wild and shrill
As the homeless wind when it roams tho hill;
So full of tears, BO loud and long,
That tho grief of tho world soomel turned to
, a song.
But soon thero carno, through the weeping
night,
A glimmering angol clothed in whito;
And he rolled the stone from tho tomb away.
Where tho Lord of tho heavens and tho earth
lay,
And Christ aro so ia the cavern's gloom.
Aud in living lustro carno from tho tomb.
Now tho bird that eat in tho heart of tho treu
Beheld the celestial mystery,
And its hoart waa filled with a isiveot delight,
And it poured a song on tho throbbing night,
Notes, climbing notos, ?till higher, higher,
They ahool to Heaven like spears of fire.
When the glittering white-robed angel heard
The Borrowing song of that grieving hird,
And heard the following chant of mirth
That hailed Christ risen from the earth,
He said: 'Sweet bird, bo forever bleat;
Thyself, thy egga, and thy moss-wreathed
neat.'
.Aud ever, my child. Hinco that blessed night,
' - Whoro death bowed down to tho Lord of light,
The eggs of that aweot bird changed their
hue,
And burn with rod, and gold, and blue;
Reminding mankind, iu thoir simple way,
Of tho holy marvel of Easter day/'
