A JAPANESE BOUDOIR.-A lady of the Hon. James Brooks' party in Japan looked into a Japencso boudoir, and this is her inventory: "Little or no furni? ture, no chairs; no bedstead-nothing but mats to sleep on. A toilet box was on tbe floor nour the wall, abont the only article of furniture in the room; in this were five drawers, and two lacquer basins on top. In the top drawer of this box was a metalio mirror, like cur ? hand glasses; in tho second drawer she j kept her powder, paint, wax, brnsh, tooth powder and brush. Two little drawers oame next; in one, she had her falso hair; in tho other, fancy pins; the lower drawer was her pillow, which is placed under the neck when sleeping on the mats, BO as to prevent the hair from being rumpled. It is made of wood, and covered with paper on the top. The . powder looks like starch, and when they uso it, they mix a little water with it, aud rab it into the paste; and they have two brushes that they use to rub it off. The paint before being used looks green, and turns red when put upon the lips and cheeks.' "Too THIN."-Many of our so-called "slang" expressions are only perversions of what was once good, wholesome English. Thus with regard to the now popular vulgarism "too thin." Smol? lett's "Peregrine Pickle" was first pub? lished as long ago as 1751. In chapter twenty-six, of that novel, where Pere? grine abruptly announces to Emelia his intention of going abroad, perhaps for some years, the pathetic picture is pre? sented of Emelia's eyes immediately filled with tears, which, however, sho adroitly attributes to the effects of the tea that was so scalding hot as to make her eyes water. "This pretext,"Bays the author, "was too thin to impose upon her lover;" and no ono supposes that Smollett intended to bo facetious in using an expression which, by extremo courte? sy, is now and thon considered funny in our day. Two newsboys, says tho Commercial Bulletin, were standing before a sogar store, when one asked the other, "Have yon got three oents?" "Yes." "Well, I have two cents; give me your three cents, and I will buy a five-center." "All right," says No. 2, handing ont the | money. No. 1 enters the store, procures the segar, lights it, and puffs with a great deal of satisfaction. "Come, now,"give us a pull," says No. 2; "I furnished moro than half the money!" "I know that," says the smoker; "but than I'm President, and you, being only a stock? holder, yon can spit." A London tradesman advertises "a nose machine," a contrivance which, "applied to the nose for an hour daily, so directs the soft cartilage of whioh the momber consists, that an ill-formed nose is quickly shaped to perfection.
