When life insurance companies were first organized, reliability of the data upon which pre?
miums were constructed had not undergone teat of experience lt waa thought, therefore, no
more than common prudence to adopt a reale of premiums which would, io auy event, meet
aU tho preaumed ana unforeseen contingencies of the business.
As long aa the matter waa involved in some doubt, it waa better to fix tbe rate too high
than to incur the risk of making it too low; becaiiBe, in tho farmer case, the error could be
easily remedied, at least in part, by returning to the policy-holders, at certain intervale, auch
portion of the premium charged aB waa ion nd necessary for tho purposes of the buaineaa and
the complote security of tho company.

Profita from theae sourcea, in a company possessed of a capita1 of (200,000, and doing a fair
amount of business, would give to tho stockholders dividends largely in exceea of what were
counted on by tho Directors of thc Universal at tho timo of ita organization. They have,
therofore, determined to divide among the policy-holders of the company a largo part of the
profita accruing from the sources named, all of which have heretofore been divided among
the stockholder?.
The plan adopted for suob division is aa followa: Every person who may hereafter insure
with tho Universal will, for the purposes of division, be treated aa a stockholder to extent of
one annual premium upon his policy; and trill share in the profits of the Company to precisely
the same extent as a Stockholder owning an equal amount of the Capital Stock.
By thia system of insurance, original with tho Universal, tho policy-holder secures the fol
wing important advantage*:
1. Inaurance at the regular "stock" rates, requiring a primary outlay of about twenty to
thirty per cent. Ieee than that charged by mutual companies, and which ia equivalent toja

Thia system of participation, in connection with the low "stock" rates of premiums, must
necessarily secure to tho policy-holders every possible advantage to be derived from prudent
and careful management.
Tho low ratea of premium con pol economy, and, independent of participation, guarantee
to the policy-holder bia insurance at a rate which is not in exceea of the cost in well managed
mutual companies; whilo, by the proposed plan ot participation in what may be consider! d
tho legitimate profita of tho business, the cost will bo still further diminished^
