When life ioanrance companiea were firnt organized, reliability of the data upon which pre?
miums wc: a constructed had not undergone teat of experience lt waa thought, therefore, no
more thLn common prudence to adopt a scale of premium? which would, in any event, meet
all the presumed and unforeseen contingencit s of the business. Aa long as thc metter was
involved in some doubt, it waa better to fix th? rate too high than to incur the risk of mak?
ing it too low; because, in the former case, tho error could be easily r?m-oiod. at leset in
part, by returning to the policy-holders, at certain inti rvala, such poi >iou of the premium
charged as was lound necessary tor tho purpor-ca of the bnsineae ana the complete security
of tho company. Experience, however, having sat intacto Hy demonstrated that these rates
are exceaaive, what possible excuse eau there be for maintaining them?
Availing themselves of thia experience, the Directora and Managers of the Universal Life
Insurance Company, at ita organization, adopt* d a scale of premi?me in accordance there
wit li, and which baa provea to be fail and adequate, and all that was necessary to meet the
requiremouta of the business. These premiums are about t wen ly five per cent, lower than
those charge by mutual oompaneia. It alao appeared, inaunnch as the rates so established,
were as near aa could possibly be determined fair ratea, and not in excess of what incuranoe
has proviouslycost the policy-holders in mutual companies, that any profita arising from
ST unen t management Joally and properly belonged to the stockholders of the company, fjar

Experience bas shown that there are sonrces of pront in the practice of tba business which
theory will not admit of being considered aa el*menta in the calculation of tho premium:..
These resnlts form a saving in the mortality of the mimbi ra of a company owing to the me?
dical selection of good lives, a gain in interest on tho Investment? of the cempany over that
assumed in the calculation of ita prtmlnma, the profita derivable from the lapaing and sur?
render of policies by the members, and from otb? r minor sources. Profits from these sources,
in a company possessed of a capita1 ot $200 OOO, and doing a fair amount of business, would
givo to tho stockholder!} dividende largely in excess of what were counted on by the Directora
of the Universal at the time of ita organization. They have, therefore, determined fo divide
among the policy-holders of the company a large part of the profits accruing from the
sources named, all of which have heretofore been divided among the stockholders.
The plan adopted for such division is aa follows : Every person who may hereafter insure
with the Universal will, for the purposes of division, bo treated aa a stockholder to extent sf
one annual premium upon bia polioy; and will abare in the profit? of the company to precisely
samo extent as a stockholder owning an equal amount of the capital stock.
By this sy ? tom of in su rance, original with the Universal, the policy-holder atoares the fol?
lowing important advantages: i
1. Insurance at the regalar "stock" rates, requiring a primary outlay of abont twenty to
thirty per oent. lesa than that charged by mutual companiea, and which ia equivalent lo a
yearly "dividend" paid in dvance of that amount on mutual ratea. Thia low coat of insur?
ance ia worthy of attention. Since its organization, thia company bas received in premiums
from its pulicy-holdera the eum ot $1.517 COO. To effect the same amount of insurance in a
mntual company would have coat them an initial outlay of $2 000.000 By allowing ita polior
holdora to retain, in their own possession, thia exceas of $483,000, tho Universal has virtually
paid them a "dividend" of $483,000 and paid It, too, in advance, inatead of at the end of otra
or more years. It ls impossible to find any example cf a mutual company furnishing insur?
ance at ao low a coat by returning to policy holders ac equal amount upon similar receipts.
2. Participation in the legitimate profite of the company, npon a plan which secures to th?
policy-holders tho eame treatment which directora and stockholders award to themselves.
This system of participation, in connection with tho low "stock" ratos of premiums, must
necessarily secure to tho policyholders evory poseible advantage to be derived from prudent
and careful management.
The low ratea of premium con pel economy, aud, independent of participation, guarantee
to the policy-holder bia insurance at a rate which is not in excess of tho coat in well managed
mutual companies: while, bv the proposod plan or participation in what may be considered
the legitimato prouts of tho"busineaa, the coat will bo still further diminished.
