Experience however, having eatisfactoiilj demonstrated that these rates are excessive, what possible excuso can there be for maintaining them? Experience has shown that thero are sources of profltin the practice of tie bnsinosB which theory will not admit of being considered as elements in the calculation of the premiums. Them; resulta form a saving in tho mortality of the members of a company owing to the me? dical selection of good lives, a gain in intel est on the investments ot the ct-mpany over that assumed in the calculation of its premiums, the profits derivablo from tho lapsing and sur? render of policies by tho members, and from other minor sources. Profits from these sources, in a company possessed of a capita* of $200,000, and doing a fair amount of business, would give to the stockholders dividends largely in excess of w li at were counted OD by tho Directors of the Universal at tho time of its organization. They have, therefore, determined to divido among tbo polioy-bulders of tho company a large part of the profits accruing from tho sources named, all of which have heretofore been divided among the stockholders. Tho plan adopted for such division is as follows: Every person who may hereafter insure with tho Universal will, for tho purposes of division, be treated as a stockholder to extent ef ono annual premium upon his policy; anel will sharo in the profits of the company to precisely samo extent as a stockholder owning au e qual amount of tho capital stock. By this system of insurauco, original with tho Universal, the policy-holder secures the fol? lowing important advantages: 1. Insurance at tho regular "stock" rates, requiring a primary outlay of about twenty to thirty per cent, lees than that charged by mutual companies, and which is equivalent to a yearly "dividend" paid in > dvauce of that amount on mutual rates. This low cost of insur? auco is worthy of attention. Since its organization, this company bas received in premiums from its policy-holder* tho sum of 11,517.000. To effect the same amount of insurance in a mutual company wonld have cost them au initial outlay of $2 000,000. By allowing its policv holders to retain, in their own possession, this excess of 1483,000, tho Universal bas virtually paid them a "dividend" of 1483,000 and paid it, too, in advance, instead of at tho end of ono or more years. It is impossible to find any example cf a mutual company furnishing inanr anco nt so low a coat by returning to polioy-holdere an eqnal amonnt upon similar receipts. 2. Participation in the legitimate profit s of the company, upon a plan witch secures to the policy.holder? tho same treatment ?hieb directors and stockholders award to themselves. This system of participation, in comedi?n with tho low "stock" ratee of premiums, must necessarily secure to the policy-holderB every possible advantage to bo derived from prudent and careful management.
