The persistent mendacity cf- tho Co? lumbia Union, in. misrepresenting;tbo people of Bou th Garomna, is truly voiu derail. The exposure of falsehood after falsehood, as they appeared'th'ita'co? lumns, sueros to have operated na' no check npon its c??rae. lt ia still the vebiole of slander, and the mouth-piece for all who \yiah to malign and traduce. Its Correspondents find in tho editor of the Union an ubi?, coadjutor, who, with saorad.oare, guards from public view the treasures of his choice. No ono can succeed so well os he in aggravating and magnifying difficulties of a private cha raoter into nouent iou ni crimes and Kn Kins horrors. His success, however, has lost him the esteem and respeot of every reputable gentleman. This reno gado of his kind has only dipped his pen in the bitter hate of the New Englander, and written the record of hits own infa? my. But for the sweet morsel of offal presented to its renders OB "fresh out? rages'-' from Ltuuren8 County, the Union and its satellites, who feed by lying and slake their their thirst with evil-spouk ing, would have received no attention from us. But tho insignificance of th? aoouser is somewhat lost in the magni? tude of the accusation. Grunting that a negro mon was whip ped and abused, where does the Uniot get tho right of oharging it to the ac count of a supposed secret organization known as the Ki\ Kins Klan? Why die not the Union give the name of the in jured I party, and tbe oiroamstanoe accompanying the assault? Becaus neither the one nor the other wonk have answered the purpose of the writer The name would lead to the truth, aoi the circumstances would not sustain bin in the false allegation. Now, we hov been at considerable pains to asoertaii the amount of truth contained in tbi sensational "outrage," oud we think th following will shear it of all its horror: A few mornings since, we Ure toi that a party of men were engaged in foxhunt. It is also props to add that the assailant was under tb influence of liquor ot the time, an there is no telling what kind of lauguay he'may have used. We will state sti further, that the assailant, as we are ii formed, is not of this County. Tl difficulty was altogether of a private an personal ob arador, yet the Union pr? claims it to the world as an ou trag committed by the mysterious Klan, t much for tho truth and so much for tl Union. The Union again says: "One man, accompanied by bis famil from the neighborhood of Olinto reaohed here yesterday, having be compelled to leave on account of his I publican sentiments." - Again we ask, why did the Union wit hold the oarno of the man who carri thia ' piece of delightful information Columbia? Wo want no sh nilling, no distorting of facts, no magnifying of personal difficul? ties into Ku Klux horrors. The asser? tion is basely, maliciously false, and no mau knows it better thou the editor him? self. For twelve long months this Coun? ty lins been in profound pence, with only here and thero a personal difficulty inci? dent to every community. This very peaco bas beon a thorn rankling in tho heart of the Radical party, or at least that portion of it that has its head-centre in Columbia. We know it, and the edi? tor of the Union knows it. During this entire time we challenge tho world to point to a singlo act, on the part of the whites, that wears tbo appearance of n Ku Klux operation. For tho benefit of tho Union wo will, however, mention threo outrages that occurred in this County, which partako of the Ku Klux character. The night attack npon the widow Cheek, tho night attaok upon old man Shaw, and tho night attack upon the family of Mr. Scott, duriug his absence. These outrages wero committed by negroes, and were of the most despicable character, and yet bnt ono of them was noticed by the Union-the one sent to it by "some dis? interested friend." These outrages, to some extent, wero perhaps tracable to the then teachings of the Union, and, besides these, we challenge the editor of that journal to name a single instance of like character that has occurred in this County.
