TM DAILY ?jj?f PHONIX. "Lot our Just Censure ^^^^^^t^^^^^-^^??&p* Atlond tho True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST S 1871. VOL. VII-NO. 120. A Rou ANTIC, MAHRIA OE.--Gol. gown? ing, Chief of tho Cherokee Nation^ was married some.weeks pinoo to Mies. Ayers, a wealthy and ont ti vated maiden, lady of Philadelphia. The affair has a spicing of romance. The lady mot- the hand? some Chief (then, and nntil recently, a I married man) some years since, in the | Quaker City, became deeply interested in him and his distant people. With the resolution of devoting her life and wealth to the advancement, of the Cherokees, she removed to Talequah, where she has since lived, and where she has been most aotive in promoting the religious and educational welfare of tho nation. Some years ago ?he adopted young Lewis Downing, son of tho Chief, a bright and promising boy, and has since watohed over his education and training with more than a motherly care. A year ago she built, ostensibly for him, an elegant residence, overlooking the beautiful .village, and furnished it with artistic taste. A few months B?UCO oconrred the death of Mrs. Downing, a ! full blooded Cherokee. And now, ut the proper time, the Chief leads to the nitor his long time admirer. SHOCKING MURDER OP A WOMAN IN ? WEST VIRGINIA.-The Weston Democrat \ reports the murder of the wife of Geo. Lewis, in Upshur County, under the following circumstances: Lewis and Minter B. Miller, a neighbor, got into a dispute which culminated in a tight. Mrs. Lewis ran between them, begging them to desist. Miller told her to. stand anide or he would kill her. As she did not comply, he seized a steno and struck her . in the forehead, orushing in the skull, forcing her eyes out upon her fue?, and killing her instantly. Miller took to flight, and made his escape to the mountains. CENTENARIANS.-Riobard Cotrell, liv? ing at Piokensville, is about 106 years of age. He came from Virginia to this Connty about thirty years ago. Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, living near PiokenB Tille, is now in her 102d year. [Pickens Sentinel. TB. TUE MK ANS OP' ESCAPE.-Tho fall has many perils for tho weak and feeble, and its sudden atmospheric changos aro trying to the constitutions of oven tho robust. Tho chilling temporatnro of tho nights, as com? pared with tho almost Bummer warmth of tho days, necessarily oxercisot an unhealthy influ? ence on all who aro oxpoacd to lt. Honco dysentery, diarrhoea, intermittent fevers, bilious attacks, and derangements of all tho secretions, are common a't thia season, 'the true way to escapo thom in to meet tho causes with a protective and invigorating medicino. HOSTETTEK'S STOMACH B?TTEHS aro de? signed for thia cxigoucy. Thi? powerful vego t able specitio relieves tho system of all acrid humors, purities tho fluida, tones the accre? tive organs, promotoa healthy evaporation through tho pores, increases tho activity of the digostivo functions, cheers tho spirits and regulates tho bowels. To do thia ?B to make tho whole body vigorous, and render it proof against the vicissitudes of temperature, and against malaria A courue of tho great tonic and alterativo ls, therefore, in all casca, advis? able aa a preventive at thia season. If, ou thc other hand, the mischief is already done, and interndttcut or'remittent fever is actually preaont, or tho liver, bowels or stomach disor? dered, there is no mo'bciue BO certain to ethel a quick and thorough core aa this harmleat and agreeable preparation. Oct G f3 TIIK CAUSE AND CUKE OF CON? SUMPTION.-The primary caneo of Con sumption is derangement of tho digestive or gana. This derangement produces delicien nutrition and assimilation. By aeeimilatioi I mean that process by which the nutriment o the food ia converted into blood, and thenci into the solid? of the body, PerBons witl digestion thus impaired, having tho slight est pro-dlepoaition to pulmonary disease or if they take cold, will be very liable to havi Consumption of the Lungs in some of it forms; and I hold that it will be impoBsibh to eure any case of ConBumption without hrs restoring a good digestion and healthy aasiml lation. The very first thing to be done ia t cleanae the stomach and bowels from all die eased mucus and slime, which is cloggiu, these organs BO that they cannot perforr their functions, and then rouse up and res tor the liver to a healthy action. For this pui Soso tho Barest and beet remedy ia Schenck' [andrake Pills. These Pilla olean tho etc maoh and bowels of all the dead and morbi slime that ?B canaing disease and decay in th whole a y a te m. They will clear ont the live of all diaoaaod bile that has accumulate there, and rouse it np to a new and health action, by which natural and healthy hilo 1 secreted. Tho atom ach, bowels and liver are tim cleansed by tho nao of Sobenck's Maudrak Pills; but there remains in the stomach a exeeaa of acid, tho organ ia torpid and th apetite poor. In the bowels the lacteal* ai weak, and requiring stn ngth and support. '. ia in a condition like this that Schenck's Soi weed Tonio provea to be tho moat valuab remedy ever discovered, lt is alkaline, ur its uso will neutralize all excess of acid, mal ing the atomach sweet and fresh; it will gb permanent tono to this important orgau, ar creato a good, hearty appetite, and prupai the system for tho firet vroccaa of a good d gestion, and ultimately make good, health living blood. Alter this preparatory tros meut, what remains to cure meet cases Consumption is tho free and persevering ri of Schenck's Pulmonio Syrup. Tho Pulm?n Syrup nouriaheathe system, purifies the blot and is readily absorbed into tho circulatio aud thence distributed to the diseased lune There it ripen? all morbid mattera, wheth in tho form ?>( abscesses or tubercles, ai then assists Nature to expel all the diseaa matter, ni tho form of treo expector?t io when once it ripens. It is then, ny the gre healing aud purifying properties of Soheucl Pulmonic Syrup, that all ulcers and caviti are healed up aouud.aud mv patient is curt Tho eaaontial thing to be done in euri Consumption is to get np a good appetite a a good digestion, BO that tho body will gn in flush aud get atrong. If a porson has d eaued lungs-a cavity or abaceaa there-t cavity cannot heal, tho matter cannot ripe so long as Ibo systrru ia below par. What necessary to cure is a new order nf thing?, good appetito, a good nutrition, the body grow in flesh and get fat* then Nature helped, tho cavities will heal, the matter ? ripen and bo thrown off in largo quautiti and tho porson regain health and streng Thia is tho truo and only plan to euro Ci sumption, and if a person is very bad. if < lunga aro not entirely destroyed, or ever ono lung ia entirely gone, if lhere ie enot vitality lett in the other to heal np, thor? hope. 1 have seen many persona ouredwitho one sound lung, live and enjoy life to a gi old ago. Thia ia what Schenak's Medici will do to care Consumption. They will cl out the oiotuach, aweoten and' atrengtbet get up a good digestion, and give nature assistance she needs to olear the ay at om ol the disease that ia in the langa, whatovor form may bo. It ia important that while using Soham Medioines, care ahonld be exercised not take cold; keon in-doo ra in cold and d? weather ; avoid night air, and take out-c exercise only in a genial aaa warm auu-ah I wirb it distinctly understood that wh reoommend a patient to be careful in reg io taking cold, while using my modiciues, HO for a special reason. A man who has partially recovered from the t flouts ot a cold ia far more liable to a relapse than Who baa been entirely cured; aud ilia pre< ly tho' ?arim in regard to Consumption, long aa the lunge are not perfectly hes Just BO long is tuero imminent danger of a return of tho disease. Hence it is that strenuously caution pulmonary pati against exposing themselves to au atmosp that ia nut gonial and pleasant. Coutlr Consumptives' lungs aro a masa of st which tho least change, of atmosphere wi flame. The grand eecrct of my success my medicines consists In my ability to au! inflammation instead of provoking it, aun ot the faculty do. An inflamed lung cai with safety to tho patient, ho exposed t< biting blasts of winter or the chilling win spring or autumn. It should bo caro shielded from all irritating influences, utmost caution should bo observed in particular, au without it a cure, under al any circumstances, is an impossibility. Thu person should bo L< pt on a wholei and nutritious diet, and all tho medicines tinned until tho body has restored to i natural quantity of flesh and strength. I waa myself cured by this treatment c. worst kind of Consumption, and have liv get fat and hearty these many years, will tung mostly gone. I have cured thom sinoo, ant) very many hayo boen cured bj treatment whom I have never aeon. About tho lat. of October I expect to possession of my new building, at thoN east corno)- of Sixth and Arch streetB; where I shall bo pleased to gi vo advice to all who may require it. Full directions accompany all my remedies, so that a person in any part of thu world can be readily cured bj a strict observance of tho samo J. fl. SCHENCK. M. IX, Philadelphia.
