THE DAILY "Let oar Just Censure Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., FRIDAY MORNING-, SEPTEMBER 8, 1871. VOL. VII-NO. 147. WHY TUB COLOREO OFFICERS WEBB SNUBBED AT THE LONO B BAN cn BALI?. Major Lewis Gaul and Captain Watkins, of the Second Battalion Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Militia, reaeived nardo of invitation to attend the grand civil and military ball at Long Brunch, on Monday evening. On presenting them selves at the hotel, the colored ofiloers wero met by a Mr. Bennie, who wished to know whether they had been posi? tively invited. The cards of invitation were thereupon prodnced. Mr. Bennie, who was greatly excited, enid that it would be unpleasant to receive thom, as the ladies wore much alarmed. Further? more, Mr. Bennie said President Grant waa expected, and he would bo greatly displeased at tho presence of colored persons in the room. Major Lewis Gaul and Captain Watkins retired. [JYeio York Sun. Becently a mad elephant entered the Mundi?, district in India, at the village of Tarroj, where he killed a woman and ahild. Ho then passed on to other vil? lages, entering about a dozen in success sion, frightening the inhabitants and killing one or two in each pince. The total of his victims between January 27 and February 19 was twenty-one persons killed, besides several wounded. Tho moat horrible and almost incredible cir? cumstance, however, is that tho savage beast was seen to devour at least five of his victims, after tearing them limb from limb. Tho brute ie said to be a magnificent creature, with tunke three feet long. At last aaoonntB he had been driven ont into a jungle, whence it was impossible to dislodge him. STRANGE FREAK OF N ATORE. -A atranco freak of nature has taken place in the track of the severe hail Btorm that OG curred in the region of Ooote's store, Rockingham County, Ya., some three weeks ago. We are not aware of any? thing of the kind occurring heretofore. It is this: That all tho orchards in tho track of the hail storm have come out in full bloom. Some orchards are in OB full bloom aa they ever wore in the spring. Not only the apples are in bloom, but the locust trees in many places are BIBO in bloom. A gentlemnn came to my houso last week and told mo on bia road here he saw an apple tree with several bushels of ripe apples on it and thousands of bloom on the same tree. A very pretty but strange sight. & SLAVERY IN BRAZIL.-The foreign pa? pers bring aoaounts of the debate in tho Brazilian Chamber of Deputies on the bill abolishing slavery. After a long and animated debate, lasting for twelve days, the first article of the bill, which declared that all children hereafter born should be free, passed by a majority of G2 to 37 votes. It is believed that thu bill abolishing slavery, as introduced by the Ministry, will pass tho Chamber of Deputies, unless the opposition succeeds in prolonging the discussion beyond thc date appointed by the law for adjourning sine die. An Illinois woman committed suicido by banging herself to an apple tree. At the funeral a neighbor, noticing the sad appearance of the husband, connoted him by saying that be had met with a terrible loss. "Tes," said the husband, heaving a sigh, "she must have kicked awfully to shake off six bushels of green apples that would have been worth $1 a bushel when they got ripe." MORE RADICAL APPROPRIATING."-A defalcation, amounting to $60,000, has been discovered in the United States Mint, in Philadelphia. Ex-Governor Pollook, Director of the Mint, refuses to give any details, for "prudential rea? sons;" or, in plain English, for "politi? cal reasons." The Philadelphia Radi? cals are in tribulation abont the matter. Emma Block, of 88 Clinton street, New York, qa ur roi ed with her husband, Monday night, and threw an axe, which missed her husband and killed a child named William Weinhart, who happened in the room. Miss Candler, daughter of J. W. Candler, a promineut Boston merchant, was the yoong lady drowned while bath? ing at Newport, on Thursday. Venezuelan advices say Gen. Bianco's troops have again been defeated, and all the Eastern part of the Republic is in arms against him. ^^TETHOLMEST Cotton Faotor and Commis. Merchant, ACCOMMODAT ION WHARF, OH ARLESTON, 8 . C. Tho very first thing to bo dono ?B to cleanse tho stomach and bowels from all dis? eased mucus and slime, which is clogging these organs so that they cannot perform their functions, and then rouse up and rcstoro tho liver to a hoalthy action. For thia pur poso tho Burcst and bent remedy is Schenck's Mandrake filia. Those Pills clean tho sto? mach and bowels of all tho dead and morbid slime that is causing disease and decay jn the whole system. They will clear out tho liver of all diseased hilo that has accumulated there, and rouse it up to a new and healthy action, by which natural and healthy bile is secreted. Tho stomach, bowels and liver aro tims cleansed by tho uso of Schenck's Mandrake Pills; but there remains in tho stomach an excess of acid, tho organ is torpid and tho apetito poor.
