THE DAILY 'Let our Just Censure BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., THURSDAY MORNING-, AUGUST 31. 1871. VOL. VII-NO. WHAT WE DRINK AND. WHAT IT COSTS. At tho request of the Massachusetts Temperance Allianoe, Mr. Yoong, of the Statistical Bureau, famishes the fol? lowing estimate of sales of liquors in the United States during the fiscal year ending June 80, 1871: Whiskey, 60, 000,000 gallons, at six dollars retail, $360,000,000; imported spirits, 2,500, 000 gallons, nt ten dollars retail, ?25, 000,000; imported wine, 10.700.000 gal? lons, at five dollars retail. 853,500,000; nie, beer and porter, 6,500,01)0 barrels, ?t twenty dollars retail, ?130,000,000; nativo brandies, wines nud cordials, quantity unknown, estimated value ?31, 500,000; total, ?600,000,000. As a proof of the correctness of the above, it muy bo (dated that during the Inst, fiscal year the receipts from retail liquor dealers, who paid twenty-five dollars each for licenses, amounted to 83,650,000. indi? cating that there waa 156,000 retailers of liquors in tho United Stutes. By includ? ing those- who escupod paying license fees, estimated at 4,000, tho number is increased. Mr. D. H. Craig, late general agent of the New York Associated Press, is said to have perfected his new system of telegraphy, to the development of whioh he hus been devoting his time and mean? for three years past, with results that can hardly fail to effect an en t iro revolution in telegraphy, by reducing its cost to a rato very little above the present rates of postage. It is claimed that -by this new aulomatio system it is perfectly practicable to transmit, with absoluto accuracy, over a single wiro, moro than 60,000 words an hour-a speed more than sxty times greater than by any ol the Systems now in use. Telegrams whioh under the Morse system now oost several dollars will, it is said, bo rednccd to a comparatively few cents, which, if true, will makeits value almost inestima? ble to the press, the mercantile communi? ty, and the public at large. A Vermonter has had threo dollars damages awarded him for being butted over a fence by his neighbor's bull. The smallness of the sam is due to tho plain? tiff's avowal that he was trying to get over the fence as quiokly as possible, so that the bull only helped him in carrying out an intention conceived of his own free will.
