But when you Buy BO, you don't "please." It dependa more on tho tem? perament than strength of mind whether, if a man drinks, ho becomes a drunkard. You take a cold, phlegmatic mau, and ho is not likely to become a drunkard. He may be a good mau, a good father, a good nusbaud, a good Christian, for aught I know, hut ho is not warm-henrt ed, impulsive, quick uud generous. His hand falls on yours cold and dummy. Give him drink, and ho feels "very com f nr-rurablo. " Give him a little more, and he feels "very comfur-rnrahlo." Give him another, and ho will go to bed "very oomfur-rur-rurablo;" and bo will get up next morning feeling "very com fur-rnr-rurable." You can't get bim be? yond the point of feeling "very comfur rur-rurable." It may niloct bis vital or? gansin the end, but there is no evidence of bis intemperance. Take tho other extreme, for I am dealing in extremo oases. Take a young man, nervous, full of fire, full of poetry, and foll of music -a young man who can sing u song or tell a story, noble-hearted, and always ripe for some mischief. Give that man a drink, and what is its effect? He feels it in every fibre of bis system. It weak? ens the power of his will-slightly. It i warps his judgment-slightly. It stimn- ? lates bis mental powers to undue nctivi- ' ty-slightly. That man is a changed < man-slightly. As be keeps on drink- , ing, and mingles in the outer circles of . the world, every circle becomes narrow- \ er, narrower, narrower. He says I will 1 give it np when it is injuring me. It is j false I fatsel When you find that it is j injuring yon, then is the time yon can- ] not give it np; you are like the soldier j who called oat to his comrades within ] the ramparts: "I've got a prisoner." ''Bring him in," said they. "He won't come," said he. "Then come in with? out him," Haid they. "He won't let me," said he. You think you know and aan guard against the danger. You are like the pilot who said he knew every rock in the channel. He steered olear of them for a while, bat finally tho ship struck. "That's one of 'em, captain," said he.-John Gough. The Chicago Republican thoa contrasts the Indian of Cooper's novels and the Indiau of to-day: "The Indian of a by? gone day used to stand on a bluff, with folded arms, and gaze sadly upon the iron hoss as it snorted through bis hunt? ing-grounds. How be Bwears at the bag? gage-man because be doesn't check his carpet-bag in a hurry, shakes hands with the conductor, borrows a chaw from the brakeman, and, reclining upon two seats, masticate? pea-nuts and reads the Police Gazelle, as the express bears him 'to tho portal of the Wost wind, of tho North? west wind, Keewaydiu."' Two Communists were discussing tho new taxes: "Well, tho Assembly cannot abolish petroleum, because itis an essen? tial oil." Another pair of pals: "So, Francois, you have found employment." "Yes." "Ainsi ono moro lost to our cause." Sir Walter Scott's wife expressed her? self with regard to her husband's indis? criminate hospitality, by remarking that she saw no difference between Abbots? ford and a large hotel, except tbut at the former nobody paid.
