A NEW TIPPLE.-We learn from a New York paper that a new beverage has been invented, and has already obtained ex? tensivo popularity in Bomb parts of Ire? land. Thia is ??methylated ether," the preparation of which is thus described: Methylated spirit is alcohol which has a oertain quantity of wood spirit and naphtha added to it to render it nause? ous and nonpnlntublo. This process ex? empts it entirely from tho excise duty in England. It is prepared there for manu? facturing purposes, mid a largo portiou of the tinotures and other medicinal pre? parations aro made with it. From me? thylated spirit a sulphuric ether is mode, which ro?uius tho peculiur flavor im? parted to tho alcohol. Tho "methylated other" IIOB long been in uso, medicinally, as a stimulant mid anrosthetio, but within a few yeats past has oo me into common use ns a bc vertigo iu some of the Northern Couuties of Ireland, where tho consumption of it is estimated nt 10,000 gallons per annum. It is oheopor than whiskey, and one gal? lon of it "goes farther" than three of whiskey. Ono would imagino that it could not bo n very agreeable doso, but it "makes drunk come;" indeed, makes it como quicker and easier than whiskey, and makes it go quicker, too; so that the toper may have the happiness of gottiug "tight" three or four times ou ether, whilo he would bo enjoying that inesti? mable privilege only onoo on any of the ordinary drinks. The methylated other, like other beneficent inventions of the age, seems to have some inconveniences or dangers attendant upon its nae. It ia explosive, we are told, when mixed with air, and the ethereal tippler must be careful to hold in his breath when ap? proaching a lighted candle, or he may "go off" liko a bomb-shell. A wealthy septuagenarian of Cogny, Switzerland, while going to his vineyard recently, met a pretty girl of eighteen, and kissed her, upon which her father, who witnessed the liberty, beat him till be had bat little life left, and thon sued him for damages. In the trial, it ap? peared that the genial burgher had an irresistible propensity to kiss all the pretty women he met within the district. The girl then testified that she didn't mind being kissed, if abe could be hand? somely paid for it, and the court thought that $200, in addition to the drubbing, would be a fair price for the defendant to pay for his sweetness. After a sleep of twenty-two days, a young lady in Pittsburgh arose and was very indignant with her friends for what she considered their unseemly wonder at the length of her nap. Her peculiar ap? pearance daring the sleep had for a time occasioned the belief that she was dead, but, fortunately, her mother insisted on retaining the body until the faot was beyond question. On awaking, the ?onng lady imagined that she had slept ut a few hours, and she related a fanci? ful dream. A man in Galveston, tho other day, who complained of being over-heated, effected a permanent onro by drinking six glasses of ice-water, without the aid of a physioian.
