It may be, however, that their peculiar .hideousness has given additional strength to this feeling, for the Jewish legislation already declared them unclean and ac? cursed, and tho Greeks borrowed their wings for the harpies, as Ohristi?ns have done for the devil. A poor, lost bat need bat fly into a room filled with company and everybody is frightened. Supersti? tious pepple tremble at their more pre? sence as an evil omen, and the strong minded among the fair excuso their terror by a pretended fear for their hair -an apprehension which ponld be well founded only if the accounts of insects being harbored in their chignons should bo veri nod. It is trae these children of darkness are neither fair in form nor amiable in temper. The naked, black skin bf, their wings, stretched out be? tween enormously lengthened fingers, like tho silk of ah umbrella between the whalebone of the frame; tho ugly claws of their hind feet; the bare appendages which frequently adorn their nosos and ears in a most eccentric manner; and their perfectly noiseless, almost myste? rious flight by touch, and not by night, all these peculiarities combino to make them unwelcome guests, among men. < "And yet they are real publio benefac? tors. When the first warm san of spring arouses them from their long winter sleep, whioh they enjoy hanging by their hind feet, head down, and the whole body carefully wrapped up in the wide cloak of their wings, they begin their night bants. A dozen fat beetles hardly snffioe for the supper of a hungry mem? ber of one variety,1 and sixty to seventy house-flics for one of another kind. All night long they pursue, with indefatiga? ble energy, every variety of beetle and moth, of fly and buff, and enjoy most of all those which do the greatest injury to our fruit trees and cereals. Even tho only really formidable member of their race, the vampire, is muoh maligned; a gigantic bat, accused of sucking the blood of mau and beast, it is strictly confined to a small district iu tho tropics, and even there ocoars but rarely." A VIRGINIA KANGAROO.-Mr. Wm. E. Purvis, of Buckhorn, Nansemond Coun? ty, has a most remarkable curiosity in a pig, perfectly formed in every rospect, except that the fore legs are lacking. I This curious animal is one of a litter of six, and is now six weeks old. Ho is called "Wicked Pris." He stands with ease on the hind legs, and eau sit up perfectly straight, and walks like a kau-' garoo. He is fat and healthy, and grows finely. Wo saw this pig yesterday morn? ing, and can vouch for the truth of tho above statement. Mr. Purvis bas no idea of making an exhibition of tho pig, but brought him to tho city to Bhow to a few friends as a curiosity. Ho has had several photographs of the. pig taken.
