It is nn incident honorable to South Carolina in tho past. The Courter saya: ''The recent publication by Miss Sa? rah M. Randolph of tho 'Domestio Life of Thomas Jefferson,' oalls np the histo? ry of the past, nod the grateful recollec? tion of tba osteom in which bia memory ? und Borvioca was held by the State of South Carolina. And this without re? gard to partisanship-for nt that time the Commonwealth was divided into Re? publicans and Federalists. "Mr. Jefferson lived in that age of] statesmen who rotired (rom high official public duty with their banda unspotted with either publio or private spoliation. He died, leaving as his only legacy a I fame without stain, and the services he had rendered his country. "Jefferson died in 1825, and it is said that when his decease was un u ou need to John Adams, who was expecting every moment tb depart, he remarked quaintly : 'Jefferson was always a little before mo.' Mr.* Jefferson had preceded him in the r reside noy. Judge William Johnson, of ' this city, then a member of the Supreme Court of the United States, delivered a I eulogy on tho life and character of Mr. Jefferson, and in it allnded to the then history of the statesmen who, having given their lives and talents to the coun? try, had diod io comparativo poverty.
