At.this time, nothing was really kno.y?o about the. growth of the shad; tharo waa a great difference of opinion among fishermen acid natu ral i nts; Borne asserted that it reached maturity, or marketable sise, in one 'year; others, that it took from two tofivo years. The better opinion seemed to. be not less than three nor moro than five years; and this was partially corroborated by. the inveatigntiona of ?Mr. M. S. Treat, ol Eastford, whioh showed that alewives, which are closoly. allied to shad, take four years to matare. It was . also cor? roborated by the time of the disappear? ance of shad after the building of dams. ' In the fall of 1867, more young shae were observed at varions places alone the river, from Glastonbury to its mouth on their way to the sound,-than had beor noticed for several years. Comparing these figures with those given above, from' Nunoatesick Point, it will be seen that. tho.?single .catch last year at that place, was, larger by nearly sixty per cent. than tho largest single draft ever before recorded. It -cannot be positively asserted tbat thia.great run of shad Was. the result .of tua hatching of 1867., Your Commis? sioners entertain tho belief that it was; and there are certainly plausible reasons for such belief. It is a remarkable co? incidence that> such a sudden increase should .appear just at the time many bad predicted it and looked for it. It is a pertinent fact, too, that no other river shared in this abundance; the supply elsewhere' was as1 scanty as in former rears. ? | i ''This alone is evidence conclusive to in no biased mind .that shad can be culti? vated at a small cost in the rivera they frequent, that they will return to the placea'where they are hatohed, and that those, who sow may reap. t . "But' it is not, the people on the banks >f tho Connecticut alone who [aro reap ng a harvest of Bhad.' Tbos? on the Danks of the Hudson aro beginning to iee the result of culture in this State. Ebree years ago Mr. Green began to pro? pagate on the Hudson'.' The fish then leposited- are now coming in. There JOB been no snob abundance of shad in that riven- for years. The oatoh has been arge already and tho market is glutted. Shad are sold at retail in New York fer a Snarter of a dollar apiece, and in the ver towna for a shilling. The whole? sale price has been as low as three cents per pound within a week. This is only i beginning.
