Tho Season ot Gardens. The time is at hand for indulging in one of the best of amusements, and the most invigorating of exercises. People of taste and feeling who have once thoroughly enjoyed gardening, and who possess facilities for still enjoying it, do not need to be reminded of tho season. There are many, however, eaoh year in New York-and the number constantly increases-who change their homes from city to surrounding country, and to whom a few suggestions regarding the most invigorating occupation they se? cure by the change, may not be super? fluous. The pains and cost bestowed npon the garden during the coming few weeks will be richly compensated here? after. Lord Bacon holds, it is true, that in the "royal ordering of gardens there ought to be gardens for all the months of the year;" but for unambi? tious people tho period juBt at hand is tho fittest, if not the sole one, for pre? paring them. For, despite the leaden skies and sullen drip, of which we have lately had so much, we are, as yester? day's weather denoted, on tho verge of "The swoot spring days, With whitening hedges and uncrumpling fern, And bine bells tromblisg by tho lurent ways, And scont of hay new mown." The taste for ornamental gardening has developed among us of late years with great rapidity. What with tho ac? cumulation of wealth, the pressure of population into tho suburbs, and tho ex? ample of Central Park, (as it used to bo,) growing up under the popular eye, a love for this graceful and elevating art is happily spreading among all classes of the people Few, indeed, can afford to practico gardening on a large scale in the neighborhood of a great city. Bacon's thirty acres of gardon, for most of ns, is a mere Utopia. It is to be observed, however, that with the growth of taste in these matters, tho grounds of other people become, as regards visible beauty and harmony, practical additions to our own. When the general eye for such things is uncivilized or barbaric, each individual is, in some degree, at the mercy of his neighbors; and only tho very rich man can keep all neighbors so far away as absolutely to control the prospect. Increasing refinement dis? penses with this necessity; and, accord? ingly, in our finest suburbs on the banks of the Hudson, the slopes of Staten Island, and the heights of Orange, there is little to offend the eye among hun? dreds of closely mingled dwellings and grounds. Whoever can possess a garden, though it be upon the humblest scale, should get it. Even "bough pots out of a win? dow" are better than nothing. Tho pas? sion for gardening, like others less inno? cent, grows with indulgence. It is not nnoommon to hear people object that gardening does not "pay"-not often, let ns admit, from feminine lips. Of course, the obvious reply is that the gar? den may almost invariably bo propor? tioned to the moans of its cultivator. There is no finer ornament for the table than flowers, and, ns certainly, no dain? tier gift. Tho humblest meal is invested with elegance by flowers, and the plain? est rooms may derive from their use an air of refinement. But the highest usn of a garden is not to give tho possessor vegetables; or fruit, or flowers. These oan, in fact, be better and more cheaply grown by the market gardeners. The superior function is that of inculcating patience and philosophy, together with other virtues which tho habit of com? muning with and depending upon nature nourishes in tho mind. When to this is added the consideration of bow much health is bettered and nerves soothed by tho open air exercise of a garden, enough has beeu said to outweigh com? mercial objections, even wero they more cogent than in most instances they aro. \Neio York limes. --? Ono hundred miles further down tho river is a point which I would prefer to Palatka, as tho temperature is moro evon and tho air dry and bracing. Mellon ville and Enterprise are localed there. I should givo a decided pre? ference to Mellon ville, lt is two miles from river or lake, and it seems almost impossible to tako cold there. Tho tables in Florida might ho better, and patients complain at times, but that is a good sign, as it indicates A return of appetite, and whon this is tho caso (hoy generally iucroaso in Hush, and then tho lungB must heal. Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, aud many other places in various parts of Florida, can bc safely recommended to consumptives in winter. In Florida, nearly everybody is using Schenck's Mandrake Pills, for the climate is moro likely to produce bilious babita than moro Northern lat it odes, lt is a well estab? lished fact that natives of Florida rarely die of consumption, especially those of tho South? ern part. On tho other hand, in New Eng? land, one-third, at leant, of tho population dio of thia tcrriblo disease. In tho Middle States it does not prevail BO largely, still thero aro many thousands of cases thero. What a vaBtper centago of lifo would bo saved if consumptives wore aa easily alarmed in re? gard to taking fresh cold ns they aro about scarlet fovor, small-pox, Ac. But they aro not. They tako what they term a little cold, which thoy aro credulous enough to boliove will wear off in a fow days. Thoy pay no at? tention to it, and boneo it lays tho foundation for another and another still, r.ntil the lungs aro diseased beyond all hope for cure. My advice to personB whoso lungs are affected even slightly is, to lay in a-stock of Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup, Schenck's 8cawced Tonic and Schenck'a Mandrake Pille and go to Florida. I recommend these particular medicines because I am thoroughly acquaint? ed with their action. I know that whero they aro used in strict accordance with my direc? tions, they will do tho work that is required. This accomplished, natnro will do tho rest. The physician who prescribeo for cold, cough or night-sweats, and then advises tho patient lo walk or rido out ovory day, will bo Bure to havo a coruso on his hands before long. My plan is to givo my throe medicines, in accordance with tho printed directions, ex? cept in some caaes whero a freer UBe of the Mandrake Pills is necessary. My object is to give tono to tho stomach-to get up a good appetite It is always a good sign when a patient begins to grow hungry. I havo hopos of such. With a relish for food and tho gratification of that relish cornea,good blood, and with it moro flesh, which is closely fol? lowed by a healing of tho lungs. Then tho cough loosens and abates, tho creeping chills and clammy night-sweats no longer prostrate and annoy, ann tho patient gots well, provid? ed ho avoids taking cold. Now thero are many consumptives who havo not tho means to go to Florida. Thc question may bo asked, is there no hope for such? Certainly then; is. My advice to such is, and ever has been, to stay in a warm room during tho winter, with a temperature of about seventy degrees, which should bo kept regularly at that point, by means of a ther? mometer. Lot such a patient take bia ex? orcise within tho limits of tho room hy walk? ing up and down as much as his strength wiil permit, in order to keep up a healthy circula? tion of tho blood. I nave cured thousands by thia system, and can do so again. Con? sumption is as easily cured as any other discaso, if taken in timo, and tho proper kind of treatment ia pursued. Tho fact stands undisputed on record that Schenck'a Pulmo? nic Syrup, Mandrake Pilla, and Seaweed Tonic havo cured very many of what seemed to bo hopeless caaes of consumption. Go where you will, you will bo almost certain to find some poor consumptive who has boen rescued from tho very Jaws of doatb by their use.
