Corrio, Charleston News says: Few men in this generation hnvo lived a -more eventful career than Captain Gorrie, and probably no eivilian who bas not occupied public position was more widely known. His acquaintances might be counted from Maine to California, and they embraced many of tho most distinguished men of the country. Born in Charleston about the year 1817, ho received a good English education, nnd then entered npon commercial pursuits, many of his contemporaries well re mern bering the time when he was a first class salesman in n dry goods storo on King street with his relative, Mr. George H. Milnor. It is said that at that time ho waa one of the few who who| com manded the highest salaries paid for this kind of service. Later ia life, say about the year 1840, events called him to the city of Washington, where for nearly 'fifteen years he wielded an influence among tho members of Congress so potent, that he was regarded as oue of 1 the ohiefs of the "lower house." In this onpaeity, as a lobby member, ho suc? ceeded in securing tho posBoge of several important bills, involving the appropria? tion of large sums of money, and himself was liberally rewarded by those in whoso behalf he acted. In one instance, he received as a fee #50,000, and altogether .met with a pecuniary and political suc ? oess quito unprecedented in those days. In everyway, however, Captain Corrie was peculiarly fitted to command and influence men in tho various stations of life-especially men of the world. Of handsome presonce and graceful carriage, with manly qualities written in every lineament of his face; gifted as a conver? sationalist and reminiscent; possessing a fand of anecdote, un extraordinary know? ledge of human nature, and u keen appreciation of the arts; charming as a host at his own dinner-table, whereon the luxury was almost boundless, hu attracted around him politicians, officers of the army and navy, and the most dis? tinguished civilians of the United States. Dining this poriod he was largely in? terested in and identified with the yachtsmen of New York and the South, waa frequently called upon to officiate as judge or referee in various matches, nnd thus became familiar with tho sailing qualities of the fastest pleasure boats on the coast. Blest with abundant means, he purchased tho best of these-the now historic yacht Wauderer-and on ono of his first cruises carried with him several members of tho Cabinet and other Washington celebrities. Political excite? ment ou tho subject of slavery running high at the time-about the year 1850 - Capt. Corrie conceived the idea of going to the coast of Africa, taking in a cargo of slaves, and bringing them to tho South. How he fitted up his beautiful craft, eluded the officials, yet ran boldly into various ports, carrying tho pennant of the New York Yacht Club, and wear? ing its uniform ; how he aroused suspi? cions of n filibustering raid on South America, and had revenue cutters Hying all about him, yet quiotly slipped away, fulfilled his purpose and lauded a cargo of negroes on au island iu Georgia, with? out being first or last discovered, are matters of familiar history. Wo only refer to them to illuslrato the bold, ad? venturous and impulsive character of the man. Whatever ho did was dono on a comprehensive scale. There was not a mean trait in bis composition. In wealth ho wus prodigal; iu poverty ho was g?ne? rons to his own hurt. Ho was as true as steel, and in society exhibited tho quali? ties which attracted and retained friends. His State had no truer or more unselfish son, and his loss will bo keenly felt by nn unusually large number of persons. One hundred miles further down tho river ia a point which I would prefer to Palatka, as the temperature is more even and the air dry and bracing. Mellonville and Enterprise arc localed thoro. i should givo a decided pre? ference to Mellonville. It ia two miles from river or lalto, and it acema almoat impoaaiblo to tako cold thoro. Tho tables in Florida might bo better, and patients complain at times, but that ia a good sign, as it indicates a rot nrn of appetite, and when thia ia the caee thoy generally increase iu flesh, and then tho bjjigs moat heal. Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and many other placea in varions parta of Florida, can be aafely recommended to consumptives in winter. My reasons for saying BO are that patient H aro lens liable to take cold thoro than where there ?B a lesa even temperature, and it is not necessary to aay that where a coneump tive person expos' B himself to frc quent colds, he ia certain io dio shortly. Therefore, my advice ?B, go well down into tho State, cut of tho reach of prevailing East winda and fogs. Jacksonville, or almost any other of the lo? calities I have named, will benefit thoae who aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered stomach, deranged bowels, aoro throat or cough, but for those whoso lunge aro diseased a moro Southern point ia earnestly recom? mended. For fifteen yoara prior to 18G9,1 wa8 profea sionally in New York, boston, Halt ?more and Philadelphia every week, where I aaw and ex? amined on an average fivo hundred patient s a week. A practice so extensive, embracing every possible pim se of lung diaeaeo, baa ena? bled mo to understand tho disenso fully, and hence my caution in regard to taking cola. A person may take vaBt quantities of "Schenck'a Ptilmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Man? drake Pilla," and yet die if he docs not avoid taking cold. In Florida, nearly everybody is uaing Schenck'a Mandrake Pilla, for the climate if? moro likely to produce bilious habita than moro Northern lat Iludes. It ?6 a well eatab liahed fact that nativca of Florida rarely die of consumption, especially those of tho South? ern part. On tho other hand, in Now Eng? land, one-third, at lcaet, of the population dio of thia terrible diaeaeo. In tho Middle States it does not prevail so largely, atilt thero aro many thousands of caaea there. What a vast per cen t u go of lifo would be aaved if consumptives wore as easily alarmed in re? gard to taking fresh cold aa they are abont scarlet fever, small-pox, Ao. But they are not. '1 hey take what they term a little cold, wLie.b they aro credulous 'enough to believe will wear off in a few days. They pay no at? tention to it, and hence it laya the foundation for another and another still, until tho lunga are diseased beyond all hopo for cure. My advice to persons wboao lunga aro affected even slight ly ia, to lay in a stock of Schenck'a Pu 1 moni*. Hy rup, Schenck'a Seaweed Tonic and Schenck'a Mandrako Filia and go to Florida. I recommend these particular medicinen because I am thoroughly acquaint? ed with their action. I knov* that where they are uacd in strict accordance with my direc? tions, they will do the work that is required. Thia accomplished, nature will do the rest.
