O. P. Vernon, on Monday, the 19th instant, at 4 o'clock, at Greenfield's Building, in the oity of Columbia, (Signed) JOSBPH CREWS, Chairman. COLOMBIA, S. C., December 15, 1870. Commenting on this document, thc Herald says: "Oar citizens aro not lo be inveigled into the olutchesof aLegislature which has assumed the functions of a star chamber. The vagabonds who prosecute tho peo? ple of Laurens indiscriminately would swear any Laarens mao a murderer, aud then hang the Judge who undertook to inquire into tho causo of his detention in a foreign bastile. A Laurena man, woman or baby would be a fool to trust himself io the clutches of those hyenas; they would only inquire if ho was from Laurens, and then Bend for Hubbard and the United States army." Chairman Crews left for Washington on Monday. -.-?-*-? GOVERNOR SCOTT ENDORSED.-Tho Hon. A. P. Aldrich having addressed some inquiries to an Ohio Democrat, in regard to Gov. Scott, has received tho following reply: "NAPOLEON, OHIO, December 12, 1870. "A. P. ALDRICH-DEAR Sm: Your lino to me of 2d instant has been received. In reply, I have to say tbut I havo been intimately acquainted with Gov. Scott for over twenty years, he having all that time been a citizen of oar town und County, and I have, all that time, and do now, differ with bim in politics; yet I must say that the statement mado by Col. Wells, in bis printed statement you sent me, is substantially correct. Gov. Scott is a high-toned, honorable gentle? man; is a man of troth and integrity; and he is, withal, a very kind-hearted man; and if you should bave any bu.si neos with him, you will find him alltl have stated. That is the way he is esti? mated here by ns Democrats. "I wish you and other Democrats of South Carolina could see and make the acquaintance of Gov. Scott. I am satis? fied you wonld feel differently towards him from what you do now. Very truly, yours, JAMES G. HALY. " In communicating this letter to the Barnwell Sentinel for publication, Judge Aldriab remarks: "AR I certainly would have published Mr. Haly's response had it been unfavor? able to Gov. Scott, it is but simple jus? tice to give him the benefit of this very complimentary notiae." THE DEFUNCT CONSTABULARY-We learn from the report of the chief con? stable, that during the past year seventy eight deputy constables have been on duty. Twenty horses were on hand from last year, three of which died, one was captured, and .sixteen remain in posses? sion of the Stato now. The expenso cf keepiog np the constabulary was 810, 696.69 for services of deputy constables; $3,863 il] forage for horses, and $10, 223.49 for expenses, incidentals and salary of the chief constable. Number of crimes committed, 365, of which 27 were murders, 124 assault and battery, I 92 assault with intent to to kill, 15 grand larceny, 32 petit larceny, and the baluoce of minor offences. THE DIFFERENCE.-A negro having complained to Forney's Press that he bad been excluded from a Philadelphia theatre, that paper, which would have pronounced the exclusion a great out? rage if it had been made in a Southern State, consoles the darkey as follows: "At all events, it is not a very material issue for our colored friend. TERRIBLE EXPLOSION NEAR BIRMING? A telegraph despatch received by tho Liver? pool Post, on the day of tho disaster, says "the injuries of tho sufferers uro. described as fearful. Tho fields iu tho neighborhood of the accident are strewed with the charred remains of the deud -headless tr un kn in somo cases. Tho scene is awful. For a milo tho roads are lined with the relatives of tho de? ceased and injured, crying and wringing their bands." Marsh, music dealer, and other smaller stores. The weather was the ooldest known for thirteen years; the ground was covered with snow, and the thermo? meter fi ve degrees above zero. At about quarter past 2, the night watohman dis? covered fire in the basement, in a room used us a pantry. An effort was imme? diately made to arouse the sleeping guests, when a scene of indescribable confusion and excitement followed. Men rusbod wildly about, trying to save th*, ir baggage, and women, half naked and bare-footed, ran into tho snow-covered streets. Engines were promptly on the spot, bnt tho water being frozen, it oc? casioned delay. Beforo twenty minutes elapsed, the flames prevented escape by the stair-cases, and tho guests commenced jumping from the windows and lowering themselves by blankets aud ropes. P. H. darke, the steward, was fatally injured by Ieapiug from tho third story. Mrs. Emily Kennearly, tho housekeeper, with two other ladies, appeared at a win? dow in the fifth story, screaming for help, but tho firemen's iaddors failed to reach them by two stories, and while they wore endeavoring to lengthen them, tho ladies disappeared iu the blaze und smoke, the room brightening in n few moments later with tho flames. There are about a dozen unclaimed trunks of parties from Nen York and other Northern cities. Jauney, of Columbia, S C., escaped, and saved all his effects even to a novel. Ho is at tho Excbang Hotel. S. Friedman, of New York, alsi escaped, without injury or loss of pro porty. Those who escaped say that in a spue of time almost incredibly short th smoke had filled the wholo house, am tho flames mado their way through tb thin wood-work partitions with fearfu rapidity. Tho Fire Department, nol withstanding the extreme cold, was oi the ground with remarkable promptness but the water could not bo mado si speedily available. In loss than half a hour fire was observed on every ono o tho live floors, and the passages wer choking with hot air and almost imps' pablo ashes. Tho scene was now one o indescribable terror. Men, women an children were in tho burning building and all who wero awako wero striving t< get out.
