4* B?? 1 I?III flJLJLl THE D A I LY .ti ?D<5. the True Event." *Y J. ?. SELBY "Let our Just Censure ?OLLTMBIA. 8. C.. THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 15. 1870. VOL. VI-NO. 231. - MB. EDITOB: I obhorve in your issue of the 3d instant, that it is in contempla? tion to reduce tho salary of the Behool Commissioner. I know very little about the duties of the School Commissioner. He may, or he may not, be adequately renameratod by a salary of $1,000, or a salary of $200; but, whioh ever of these amounts maj ba bis uuo, it win have io be drawn from tho pockets of the people^ and one of the people, therefore, may be permitted to say a word. The interest wbioh a civilized pooplo naturally feels in all questions bearing ripon education bas, for some time past, been merged in the feeling of indigna? tion and contempt, created by the hypo? critical legislation on this subject-a subject of supremo importance at all times, and of paramount importance now, when ignorance and moral obliqui? ty is enfranahised, and public opinion whioh, by majority, is now the con? trolling power, must, if vicious, produce a vicions Government; if virtuous and enlightened, a Government moral and intelligent. I.appeal to all who, from position or influence among their fellows, have it in their power, to further tho claims that ignorant citizenship has upon the Go? vernment of any Stato. If it is the duty of tho School Com? missioner to secure tho appointment of competent instructors for tho ignorant, and to see that those instructors do their duty, and he does his duly, let him be adequately paid; but if the office is a sinecure, and tho real and only laborers are those whose time and energies aro given to remove tho foul blot of moral and intellectual incapacity in our votiug population, lot them bo, if you please, a sweeping awny altogether of tho com? missioner, and an establishment, with liberal renumeration, of thc commis sioned to accomplish this most necessary work. Pray, lot the old fogy ism'of "A, B, C,' and "two and two make four" schools be consigned to thc lumber room of obsoleto barbarism, and, if all men are to be sovereigns, let us bava a liberal appropriation for an education that may, to some extent, qualify them for their responsible position. The school-master, not tho school over? seer, is the laborer who is worthy of his hire. If the Commissioner is only a man of straw, by all means abolish him; if ho io tho fly wheel, the governor, or uuy neoessary componeut part in tho ma chine, for elaborating wisdom and mo? rality out of heathenish darkness and moral obliquity, let bim be paid ad valorem. Only let not tho great work of education for the people bo estopped by Republican, Democrat or Reformer. QUI VIVE. Under the new appointment, South Carolina will gain ono' member of Con? gress.
