ABTBONOMIOAI,,-? enri?os and very rare planetary position will occur on the J 8th and 9th of next month, to wbioh no attention has hitherto been called, and it seems to have escaped the notice even of the compilers of the Astronomical Ephe? merides. For the space of two whole days and five hours, the planet Venus will be behind the son as viewed from any part of the earth's surface. The planet is then on the further side of her orbit, and her relative motion is only 15>? minutes of aro daily, while at tho instant of conjunction she will be within 43 esconda of aro of the sun's centre. The bright planetary spot will apparently touch the Western edge of the sun at ll o'olock p. m., on the G th of December, Chicago time, and emerge from behind the solar disc, on its Eastern edge, at ? j o'olook on the morning of the 9th. Thc phenomena of immersion and emersion will not be visible at Chicago, the sun being below our horizon on both occa? sions, bnt the two bodies may be seen through the telesoope as almost in con? tact late in the afternoon of the Cth and early in the morning of the 9th of De? cember. The emersion will bo invisible in Europe. The phenomenon is about as rare as the transit of the same planet across the sun's disc, whioh occurs only onoe on the average in fifty-eight and n half years. The next transit will occnr ia December, 1871.-- Chicago Tribune. This story comes from California: "The ] Rev. C. C.
