In the evening, about 6 o'clock, it blow a moat-violent hurricane. Abolai half-past 0 o'clock, the sea stove in tho cido of the engine-room, tho ship at th&t: timo being unmanagenble. The captain told the passengers that it was impossible lp save tho ship, nnd ordered the boats to be got ready. This was about half-past 9 o'clock in the evening. The two boats which were left were got ready, ? None of the passengers would como on deck: to get into the boats, it blowing so awfully that they could not get along the deck, the ship being listed. In the other boat two were lost on tho breakers, but the others, with tho utmost difficulty, managed to reach the* shore, and arrived at Savannah on Saturday morning, on board the steamer Nick King. The death of the passengers and crew moat have been horrible in the extreme. When the Bteamer turned over on her beam ends and filled with water, there was Dot the slightest chance for saving them. Without even a chance to mur? mur a prayer for mercy, they wore sum? moned to the unseen world, their death cries of agony and despair drowned amid the bowlings of the storm around them. The Varuna was commanded by Capt. Joseph T. Spencer, a young runn, but ono who sustained tho character of a brave seaman, a bold and fearless navi? gator, and a courteous gentleman. The shipwreck was one probably that no hu? man agency bad power to prevent.
