I wa? introduced to him just as the steamer North Star was leaving her dock, at Now York, for Europe. For tho first twenty four hoars, "Richard was himself;" but that fell destroyer, who spares neither age, sex, nor condition-sea-sickness seized him, and nothing more was seen of the jolly doctor for several days. We had left the Banks, and were steaming along beautifully, when, one morning, I baw the doctor's head emerging from the lower regions. Bat what a face! long, lugubrious, ' distressed-his hair not caredBfor, dress untidy, eyes bloodshot! I contd scarcely believe this apparition was the jolly doctor, who had kept ns all in a roar the first day out. '.Well, nay dear doctor, how do you feel by this time?" From Surprise Valley comes the fol? lowing story of an old fellow who got very jealous because his young wire went to a ball with a good-looking fellow, and stayed ont nntil broad day-light. Tho old chap went to a justice, of the penco and told his story, winding it up with, "I want yer to help me, for that ar thing hBB been going OB about long enough." "Well," said tho Justice, "you can write down to Yreka, and see if some of the lawyers can't get you a divorce. "Di? vorce!" roared the angry man, "who the deuce wants a divorce?" The Justice began to get w ra thy. "If you don't want a divorce, what the deuce bronght yon here?" "Why, I want an injunc? tion to stop further proceedings."
