THE DAILY jfifcHOgiX. "Let our Juat Censure ^5^BW^^^^^P??ffS?^ Attend the True Event." RY J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA, S. C.. WEDNESDAY MORNING. OCTOBER 5, 1670. VOL. VI-NO. 170. " A ?nsT-fc?TE' ?B&?nnmoir " oSPfrnE Lwdor-R STATTJUIN 'NEW Y?RK.~Afr1g?t f ul obj?ot. lias been' i placed in Union square,! lt ia said to be ? statue of Abra haps. Lincoln. But it does not resemble Mr. Lincoln. The lines which gave tho face character are not there. But the sculptor bus tried to ut one for this defeet by'putting plenty bf hard lines in the oloth?fl, which are enough to distract anybody who thinks that dress need not i of necessity in?renle the hideousness of man. Tbe mind bas not conceived such a pair pf pantaloons as that which the artist has pnt on this statue. To inorease the beauty of their effect, the designer of the work has clapped a Roman toga ever the upper part of the figure, thus combining the costume of the past and the present in a manner never yet dreamed of by caricaturists. There never was such a statue seen in this world be? fore. It is like tho hideous nightmare which people have after supping on roast pork and lobster sn Iud. How much it oost to make it and put it up, we do not know, but we will gladly receive sub? scriptions toward the expense of taking it down and sending it off to Chicago, where "works of art" of this kind aro highly appreciated.-New York Times. HASTENING HOME.-Life bears us on like the stream of a mighty river. Our boat at first goes down the tiny channel through the playful murmuring of the little brook and tho willows upon its grassy borders. The trees shed their blossoms over our heads, the flowers on the brink seem to offer themselves to our young hands; we are happy in hope, and grasp eagerly at the beauties around ns; the stream hurries on, and still our hands are empty. Our course in youth and in manhood is along a wider, deeper flood, and amid objeots more striking and mag? nificent. "We ari/ animated by the mov? ing pictures of enjoyment and industry passing us; we are excited by our short? lived enjoyments. Tho stream bears us on, and joys and griefs aro left behind us. We may be shipwrecked, but we oanhot be delayed; for, rough or smooth, the river hastens towards its home, till the roar of tho oceau is iu our ears, and the waves beneath our feet, and the floods aro lifted up around us, and we take our leave of earth aud its inhabi? tants, until of our further voyage there is no witness save tho Infinite and Eter? nal.-Bishop Heber's Farewell Sermon. A NEGRO OR A WOMAN?-The Repub? lican enthusiast, Theodore Tilton, de? clares that "tho next vice-President of these United States must bo a negro." Mrs. Stanton, of tho Revolution, declares that the nest Vice-President must be woman. An issue such as that ought to wind up the womau's rights party. General Ripley is paying off in Paris that (little LaFuyette-Rochambcau bill which France holds against us. There is but one question that wo can seo which would affect the justice of this settle ment, to-wit : Is what he offers n legal tender? [New York Commercial Advertiser. Chapter or fir.n- Space is valuable in a newspaper, and it is'thoreforo proposed in thia advertisement to condense a variety of facts, important to tho public, into a small compass. Tboso facts refer to Hostettor's Stomaoh Bitters-what that celebrated medi? cino is, and what it will do. lin the first place, then, the article is stimulant, tonio and alter? ativo, consisting of a combination of an abso? lutely nure spirituous agent with tho most valuable medicinal vegetable substances that Botanic ro-search has placed at tho disposal of tho chemist and the physician. These in? gredients are compounded with great caro, and in such proportions aa to produce a pre? paration which invigorates without exciting the general system, and tones, regulates and controls tho stomach, tho bowels, tho liver and the minor secretive organs. What this great restorative will do must be gathered from what it has done. Tho case of dyspepsia, or any other form of indigestion, in which it hu.- boen persistently administered without effecting a radical core ,s yet to be hoard from, and tho same may bo said of bil? ious disorders, intermittent fever, nervous af? fections, general debility, constipation, Bick headache, montai despondency, and tho pecu? liar complaints and disabilities to which thc feeble are so subject. It purifies all the fluids ol the body, including the blood, and the gentle stimules which it imparts to the nervous sys? tem is not succeeded Dy tbolslighcst re-action, This is a chapter of facts which readers, foi their own Bakes, should mark and remem? ber._Oct 2 |6 PAIN KILLER-1'ERR? A dressing which is at once agreeable, healthy, and effectual for preserving the hair. Faded or gray hair ie soon restored to its original color., with this gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thick? ened, fulling hair checked, and bald? ness oflen, though not always, cured by its use. Nothing can restore thc hair where tho follicles are destroyed, or thc glands atrophied and decayed. But such ns remain can be saved for usefulness by this application. Instead of fouling tho hair with a pasty sedi? ment, it will koop it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent thc hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. Free from those deleterious substances which make sonic preparations dangerous, and injurious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing che can bo found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts long on thc hair, giviug it a rich, glossy lustre and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C.
