One of tho palatial gambling-houses at
Saratoga was thrown open to tho general
pnblio a few mornings since, when ladies
and gentlemen wero invitad to enter, to
look over tho elegances of tho establish?
ment, and judge for themselves whether
or not there were any attractions within
its spacions walls. Among the visitors
was a very religious lady, past middle
age, who was shown through the edifice
and everything explained io her satisfac?
tion. On reaching the door, preparatory
to her departure, with her hand pointing
to the ceiling, she said:
"I would like to ask you ono question.
"What good will it do you to gain all the
money in the world, and then lose your
soul?"
"Wo don't play for souls, madam; wo
only play for money; and them ns can't
put down noedn't expect to take up,"
replied the cioerono, who was showing
the party through.
Tho old lady appeared like one dis?
gusted, and went away shaking her head
and evidently not satisfied.
SUDDEN DEATH.-Tho venerable ex
Judge, Aaron Vanderpoel, of Now York,
died suddenly on Tuesday, from tho ef?
fects of the heat. Ho was an eminent
lawyer, for six years a member of Con?
gress, and a firm supporter of the ad?
ministrations of Presidents Jackson and
Van Duren. Subsequently ho was a
Judge of the Superior Court of New
York city. He was an uncle of tho late
John Van Euren.
General O'Neill, lato Fenian general?
?simo iu the raid upon Canada, has writ?
ten a pathetic letter from his dungeon
nt Burlington, complaining of his utter
destitution. He says ho has not got a
M dollar to fee a lawyer, or a ceut to buy
a newspaper, stationery, or postage

Lazarus Fuchs, 1112 years of age, is
still living near Warsaw. Only throe
years have elapsed since his hair became
gray, and when ho was 93 years old he
had a son by his second wife. His father
lived 120 yoars, and his grand-father 126
years. So says the Gazette Hebdomadaire.
