The tenderest flower, bedrencbed with rain Still lifts its head and smiles again, When morning light dispels tho cloud Which lately thundered last and loud; And thou, my heart, be as tho flower. The little streams with crystal flow, By some rudo storm, doth murky grow, And angry rushes dark and fast, Yet soon will cloar and calm at last ; And thou, my heart, learn from the atroam. Tho mighty oak, at winter's blast Strips off its leaves and limbs and mast, And Btands a typo of mute despair, But blooms again with vernal air; And thou, my heart, be as tho oak. Old ocoan's tido in tompost driven, Lashes tho shore, and crios to Heaven In fearful woe, in fury wild, But soon is still as nestling child; And thou, my heart, learn from tho sea, The flowor, the stream, tho oak, tho sea, All havo their times of gloom and glee, To them thoro comos at last relief, But souls no'er find s urce a HO of grief; Then thou, my heart, learn to submit. All nature has somo fitting balm To heal, renew, refresh or calm; But thore aro hearts whose ceaseless woo Solace or calm oan never know; Then thou, my heart, learn to endure. Cast up thy gaze from earthly things, Deem sorrow good; to thoo it brings Promise of lifo when Nature dioa, For Nature's voice forover cries, Obi bruised heart, trust God alone. An Avalanche af Death. Brevet-Colonel Merriam, Major of the Twenty-fourth Infantry, who is now in Austin, after four years of military ser? vice on the frontiers of Kansas, New Mexico and West Texas, had received leave of absence, and was journeying with his wife and child from El Paso to the Texan coast. They had reached the head of the Conoho Hiver, and camped for the night on Sunday, the 24th of April. The stream at this point is so small that a man can step across it any? where. The banks were twenty feet above the bed of tho water. Fatigued with the long journey of sixty-eight miles in the previous twenty-four hours, withont water, the party were pleasantly resting, when, early in tho evening, Colonel Merriam was roused by the signs of an approaching storm. TL.9 tent was fastened and made secure as possible, and about 9 o'clock a hail-storm burst upon them, accompanied by some rain and a strong wind. The fall of hail was unprecedented, lasting until nearly ll, the stones being of the size of hens' eggs, and striking the tent and prairie with a noise like near and incessant mus? ketry. The Colonel, who was not igno? rant of the sudden and extreme over? flows to which the mountain streams of Texas are liable, went ont into the dark? ness as soon ns tho storm had ceased, to note what effect had been produced on this rivulet. To his amazement, he found in tho formerly almsb dry bed of the creek a resistless torrent, loaded and filled with hail, rolling nearly bank full, white as milk, and silent as a river of oil. He at onco saw the danger, and ran back to the tent, shouting to the escort and servants to turn out. He placed Mrs. Merriam, tho ohild and nurse in tho car? riage, and with the aid of three men, started to run with it to the higher ground, a distance of not moro than sixty yards. Scarcely a minute had elapsed from the time the nlarm had been given, but already tho water had surged over tho bank in waves of such volume and force as to sweep the party from their feet before they had traversed thirty yards. Merriam then abandoned tho hope of saving his family in tho car? riage, and tried to enter it in order to swim out with them, but he was swept down the ice-cold torrent like a bubble. Being an expert swimmer, ho succeeded in reaching the bank abont 200 yards below, and ran back to renew thc effort, when ho received tho terrible tidings, that the moment after he was swept down, the carriage, with all its precious freight, had turned over and gone roll? ing down the flood, his wife saying, ns Bhe disappeared, "My darling husband, good-by." Tho little rill of a few hours before, which a child might step across, had become a raging river, covered with masses of drift-wood a mile in width, and from thirty to forty feet deep. Before day, the strange and momen? tary flood had passed by, and tho small stream shrank to its usual size, and rau in its wonted bed. Tho Bad search be? gan. The drowned soldiers and ser? vants, four in number, were found, and the body of tho wifo taken from tho water about three-fourths of a milo be? low, and prepared for a journey of fifty three miles to tho post of Concho for temporary burial. Not till three days after, was the body of tho child found, four miles down tho stream, and a long distance from its bcd. Tho beaver ponds, from which tho Concho takes its riso, were so filled with the ioy hail, that tho catfish were killed by tho congela? tion, and wero swept in wagon loads, together with myriads of smaller nui mais of the plain, such as rabbits ?md snakes, all over tho country by the sud? den and rushing Hood. Three days after the storm, when tho party left the Concho, the hail still lay in drifts and winrows to tho depth of more than six feet.-Aus/in (Texas) Journal.
