Dr. McLeod, of New York, Moderator; Rev. Dr. Steele, of Phila? delphia, Secretary; and Rev. Woodside, of Brooklyn, Assistant Secretary. On , taking the chair, Dr. McLeod mudo a ( short address, alluding to his connection with the Synod, ns stated by the clerk, for thirty-fiye years. Ho looked upon this as a crisis in the history of the Re? formed Presbyterian Church, and hoped the Synod would not be governed by u partizan spirit in its deliberations. Re? ports of Presbyteries were received. All those that referred to the subject of a union with the United States Presbyte? rian Church, favored it, except the Euast j ern and Philadelphia Presbyteries, whioh were opposed to the union. Tho Ohio J and Chioago Presbyteries do not refer , to the subject. PHILADELPHIA, May 20.-In tho Pres- j byterian Assembly this morning tho Moderator road a congratulatory dispatch addressed to the Assembly by the venera? ble Dr. Elliott, who was Moderator of the General Assembly of 1838, at which < time the memorable schism occurred. ' WASHINGTON, May 20.-lu tho Senate, the Pacific Railroad bill was placed on the calendar, next to the bill reducing taxation. The House is fillibustering ( over adjonrnment. The Houso Commit- ^ tee on Pacido Railroad considered the trans-continental route, but no result arrived at. The clerk of the committee 1 Bays they are fighting among themselves, ( and the result will bo, thoy will get no road at all. In the Senate, the entire day was de? voted to the bill enforcing the fifteenth j amendment. In the Honse, a bill to compensate the j officers and sailors of the Keavsage for ! the destruction of the Alabama and ap- 1 propriating $190,000 out of the Japanese , indemnity fund, passed. A message from tho Senato was rc- ? ceived announcing that the Senate j had amended the House resolution of , adjournment by fixing July 15. I The Commissioner of Internal Reven no has written a very sharp official letter to j a party in Albany who, it seems, has re- ] cently brought oharges against a mer- ( chant of that city for violation of tho j internal revenue laws, whieh, upon in- , veatigatiou, proved groundless. The , letter takes the ground that these self- , appointed detectives and voluntary spies, who make it a business to bring charges , against honest men for technical viola- 1 tions of the law, have no claim to be 1 considered other than as disreputable personages, and he administers a very severe rebuke to the parlies in question. Internal revenue receipts to-day $897,000. Supervisor Bridgolavd, of Texas, re? ports that tho grand jury of that State have found fifty-four indictments against parties there for revonue frauds. Several ex-revenue officers are among thoso in? dicted. Congress will adjourn on the 15th of July. PNEUMATIC EXPRESS.- It takes soven teen seconde to send a written message through a pneumatic tube from London to a point 400 miles distant. This beats steam, and is not behind electricity. Bags of heavy mail matter aro sent three milos in two seconds. By the breaking of a lamp and the communication of fire to her dress, Miss Mary Sanford, of Carterville, Georgia, seventeen years of ago, was so severely bm ned on Saturday night last, tnat Bho diod in consequence. Judge Jesse Lambertis, of Rome, Ga., who has joined 2,700 couples in tho holy bonds of wedlock, did the good deed himself on last Sunday. It seems that ho required long observation to become convinced of the utility of tho measure. ,ii u lui'?.! ii ?jjjf^j.'MUL:. tx'j.vvi./;!'!^Qrrrlir."-~~rj ;-. '?W?^CX?l? ?ND. C.?Mlq^Bcbli,? In Hoboken, also, the offerings of the same description of property aro unusually large. A NEW RAILROAD PROJECT.-It is stated that a Senator of the United States, a few days ago, visited New York for tho purpose of getting up a Wall street combination to push through a now Southern railroad project in which he and a small Senatorial ring are to be tho beneficiaries. A memorandum made by one of the beneficiaries, who is a Sena tor, is referred to, and will, it is said, show most unfavorably for him in an in? vestigation proposed in the Senate. It reduces the yield of the income tax $5,741,105, by increasing exemption to $1,500, and throws off $83,966,736 by repeal of cer? tain schedules. It levies three per cont, tax on deposit of Qovernment money in banks, amounting to $300,000. The bill will be returned from the committee to I whom it was referred within a week. The action accords with an universal and imperative demand. There may be de? bate on the manner in which the reduc? tions are made. POLITICAL APATHY.-One of tho most ! depressing signs of tho times in this Dis? trict is the groat indifference manifested by the people in relation to their politi? cal condition. This apathy does not arise for want of a proper appreciation of their situation, for in private convor-1 sation thoy aro freo and open in their opposition to the present administration, and solicitude f jr n ohunge; but they are disposed to keep aloof from any practi? cal effort to bring ubout a better condi? tion of things.
