ease was given to them, rendering a ver?
dict cf not guilty. This was the result
expected, for it has, during the latter
part of the proceedings, been evident
that, so far as McFarland was oonoerned,
the caso was virtually disposed of, and it
was more those who had aided, abetted
and sympathized with Richardson in
gaining the affections of Mrs. McFar?
land and taking her to himself, who were
on trial than the prisoner. In fact, free
loveism and nil its supporters, direct and
indirect, or rather those pernicious doo
trines whoso influence tends to weaken
the marriage tie, bave been on trial, and
up for au airing and public condemna?
tion. Tho ground of acquittal is, of
courso, the insanity of McFarland when
he did tbe fatal shooting, a thing the
jury ought, however, to be very euro of
before accepting it as a fact.

Among the victims of the recent terri?
ble calamity at Richmond, was Mr. W.
H. Thomson, of Sidney, (a suburb of
Richmond,) who was instantly killed.
His remains were conveyed to his houso,
but his family was destitute, and not
kuowing where to apply for aid to defray
the expenses of tho funeral, they were
fain to bury bim iu the garden by can?
dle-light. The little group of sorrowing
friends gathered around au open grave,
dug by their own hands; the scene faint?
ly illuminated by a flickering candle; all
the incidents and surroundings wero of
a nature.to invest the scene with a so?
lemnity exceeding even that of ordinary
burial.
